Summary...I bought a 2001 GTI 12v VR6 with 112,000 miles on it, drove it a total of 200 miles before the head gasket blew. Local wrench wanted $3500 to replace gasket, timing chain, water pump and thermostat, so I am doing it myself.
So...I broke one of my injectors trying to do good by my first ever VW rocket. I had planned to send them all out for rebuild just for good measure.
Also, in order to do some mild performance upgrades since I am already in there, I have ordered among other things, an Autotech 262 camset, HD springs, lifters, etc. etc.
I have read that the Ford Motorsport BB302 injectors will work with the 12v VR6, but I understand there are differences in size between injectors used on MK3 and MK4 VR6's. Will these injectors work with my MK4 dub which has the AFP head? Hoping they will considering a set of six costs just a few dollars more than a single new OEM.
Please no guessing, any educated responses from those of you who have actually done this would be greatly appreciated. I plan to add a Stage I turbo at some point in the next year if that makes any difference.
I guess nobody has actually done this because I haven't gotten any responses, but through a little research this is what I've discovered.
The Ford Motorsport BB302 injectors manufactured by Bosch may fit a MK3 VR6, but it definitely will NOT fit a MK4 VR6 because it is 1/2" too long.
However, fiveomotorsports.com has a custom flow-matched set of 30# injectors that does fit. It is part # 734US325 and runs only $405 for the set. A much better proposition than a replacement OEM at $179 a piece.
Hope this information is helpful to someone else down the road as well.
