Okay so this thread is mainly just to vent.

My problem is that every time I have a passenger in the car it seems that they slam the door shut. It's like they can't help themselves. Quite frankly, I'm getting sick of reprimanding my passengers for this offense. No matter how many times I ask them not to slam the doors they still do. The sound makes me shutter.

    Why is this happening!?

    I have a few hypothesises:
    1. My passengers own ****ty jdm cars with doors so light that they need to be slammed to shut correctly
    2. The doors only sound like they are being slammed
    3. The doors on the passat are heavy due to solid manufacturing and will slam with any momentum behind them

Des anyone else share these sentiments?

Pisses me off, too. I tell them that if they have to take their hand of the door, they're closing it too hard.

Yeah same for me . I suppose maybe out doors are light or the hinges require less force to close.

It irks me as well. The Passat doors may be heavy, but that doesn't matter to my passengers. If I'm in my car or one of my parent's, the door is always slammed! This is my dad's truck, he slammed the door and this is what happened. It may have been damaged or something already, we all find it hard to believe that the door could shatter the window like this but anyways, the safelite guy is outside now replacing it...one $1000 insurance claim later...

My experience has been that most people only give a marginal amount of thought to their own car, and care even less about someone else's vehicle. They probably slam your car door just like they slam their own car's doors. Only difference is they think that you're nuts when you point it out to them.

I agree. I'm currently attending a high school and like most teenagers they drive and crappy/abused civic or ford that they dont give two craps about. And i guess with that mentality they treat my car the same way.

My wife is incapable of closing a car door like a normal person. Every time she gets out of the car I cringe and quietly mutter... "God Damn".

I agree it'd be one thing if we were dealing with a Tercel or something, but she's driven an Audi for the last 9 friggin years.

  10. 05-15-2012 05:42 PM #10
I agree with 1 and 3 from the OP.

This drives me nuts! I cringe every time. It's especially worse when it's someone who has never ridden in the car before. For me it always seems like the rear passenger side door is the worst.

One reason, you are too soft.

I have carried these in my car:

When someone that rides in my car slams a door, I ask them nicely to walk over to me, put their hand out, palm down, and I give them a solid smack.

Usually I get some swearing and why did you do that wah wah wah, and I explain, that if they continue to slam my car door in that manner, I will continue to remind them NOT to continue with said behavior.

It has worked thus far, and I am hardly asked to drive people around.

    Win/Win.

I thought it was just me...I HATE that slamming. The doors are heavy but nicely balanced and I always tell them just give it a little push and it will shut like a vault. I think it's more habit than anything else though (to make sure they're closed).

    Now that's funny!

Gotta be honest, never really noticed it until this thread. Dropped my boy off at baseball and you would swear he was trying to slam a barn door. WTF?!

The wife never can close a door without slamming the damn thing. Many years ago, while we were still dating, dropping her off and she slammed the door on my monteSS. I yell "why don't u slam it harder next time". She walks back to the car, slams the door harder and shatters the passenger window, showering me with glass. Ooh did she pay!

Holy ***t! I usually have to put up with my wife doing it and not having a clue. You guys rule! How about them kicking the door open when they get out then slam it?

Its weird because I just noticed today when somebody slammed the sh!t out of mine. It was like fingernails on the blackboard kinda painful.

Fortunately, I talked my girlfriend into buying a Jetta that she's now in love with and she takes great care of my doors

+1. The door handle is the place designed to be used for opening/closing the door. The correct way to close the door is to grasp the exterior handle and gently push the door closed. If someone lets go of the handle, then they are slamming the door. This is not only unnecessary, but can also damage the door and related parts.

If someone is entering my car, I will "help" them with the door. I open the door and then let them get seated. I maintain control of the door by firmly grasping the outside handle, and preventing them from closing the door. I then push the door closed gently and correctly.

When someone is exiting my car, I try to run around and "help" them close the door correctly.

"Like your mom/gf when she sits on the toilet.." followed by a Family Guy style cut scene. Whatever, I tried.

My doors don't sound anywhere near that solid. Especially if the window is partially down.

I also hate nose-pickers. Don't wait until you sit down in my car to start mining for nose gold. Do it in your own home or car, dillweed.

Haha, I actually listen to the thud now. I thought it sounded pretty solid, much more so than his M3..granted it's a conv. w/ frameless windows, so I assume that creates a bit more noise.

I figured there were other out there that hate it just as much as I do. To answer the question I think it's 1 & 3. People don't care about other peoples things and I should start riding around with a stick to slap the fire out of a door-slammer. My son is 6 and he knows how to close the door properly. I hate the commercial now because people think its justification to slam my doors. But they shall learn, once I have that stick.

I make it a point to tell anyone exiting my car to not slam the door, or the trunk. I don't have to explain to you guys the feeling I get when the door is slammed. The worst offenders are mechanics, then they look at you funny when you say something.

Back in the day I had a Datsun 310 and my best friend had a Chevy Malibu. Every time he got out of my car, he slammed the door and I kept waiting to hear glass shattering. Irritated the hell out of me. At some point in time, after a fairly reasonable number of times getting out of his car and having to reclose the door because I didn't use enough force, it finally dawned on me: the Malibu doors were long and heavy and required far more force to close than the cheaper tinny doors on my Datsun. He was used to his Malibu and used the same effort to shut my doors, hence the slamming. I was accustomed to my Datsun's doors and consequently never used enough effort to shut the Malibu's doors, hence the constant reclosing.
In spite of the valuable insight and lesson learned, I still cringed every time he got out of my car.
