Thread: 1955 Mercedes Gullwing 300SL

  1. 05-15-2012 03:59 PM #1
This past saturday morning before driving out to west chester i had the pleasure of seeing this completely original gullwing in person for the first time. An old friend that we haven't seen in awhile owns this car and decided to bring it by. I thought i would share these pics. Enjoy!

Such a beautiful design from every angle, not to mention how iconic it is

Friedrich Geiger did a good job with this one. The car is actually aerodynamic, not just fancy looks.

    Gorgeous. I love 300SL's.

Just make sure the guy wearing blue jeans doesn't sit in that Evora unless the jeans are super old.

I adore the look of the Oyster interior in the Evora, but at Pebble a few years ago someone wearing a nice new pair of blue jeans stained the leather in a 15 minute drive. At least it wasn't my car.

    Overall, they are beautiful cars.

But, I never 'understood' those slats/pods(?) running down the sides.

Ornamentation. Mercedes is and has always been king at this. Icky in my eyes.

Vestigial wings. That was the Jet Age. Everything had a winged component. The little-brother 190SL was a pretty nice car, too, but nothing matched the 300SL. I did prefer the convertible, though.

I was going to a buddy's shop in late 1999 to see how the restoration on his Porsche 356 Continental was going. After leaving, we were stopped at a red light when I said "Holy s**t Greg, look across the intersection". Low and behold a silver 300SL gullwing. We were going apes**t and apparently the owner saw us and gave us a big wave. Man, that thing was a beauty.

Above the wheels? Ornamentation, but a big part of what makes the car appear to be 'in motion' even when standing still. The grilles on the front fenders are functional vents for engine cooling.

One of the most beautiful cars ever built.

I don't Barry. Haven't spoken with him in a couple of years and he may have sold it without completing it. It was midnight blue with a red vinyl interior.

I'll shoot him a message on FB

Coupe. The only modification he was adding was the third (emergency brake light) to the rear window as my understanding was the tail lamps didn't light the brake light sufficiently causing many 356's to get rear-ended.

Greg wrote the factory in 1999 asking for the original color combination. Stuttgart sent him the swatch and all information on the colors. His 356 was last registered in southern California in 1980 and had been painted yellow. He literally found it in a barn north of Seattle in 1998.

Tail lights suck. Can't be seen during the day. I practice defensive turning.

I tried LED lamps, but they don't draw the proper amount to trigger the bi-metal flasher.

as i understand, they have the power to weight ratio of the modern 350z...making them incredibly quick for their time.

amazing car and in beautiful condition!
