Well i'm shopping around for a radar detector and obviously everyone has their own opinion when it comes to each brand. I am interested in hearing/learning about what you have to say about your preferred brand. What kind do you use and where exactly do you mount it? I don't like it when all the wires are all over the dash while keeping the detector mounted on the dash. It looks way too cluttered and what not but i'm also not as tech savy where I can DYI hardwire it to the rear view mirror. What are my options?

    Red or blue?

There's a $300 price difference between bel and val. Is Valentine really worth the extra 300?

I know there's a write up (which I will eventually dig up for reading pleasure) on how to hardwire a radar but was it easy for you guys? Did you gents vagcom it or simple wire tap will do?

It's been a while but I remember that the V has forward and backwards radar does it still do that? They also used to have problems with metalized tint just in case you had that or we're thinking. Hardwiring is is easy you just cut the cigarette cord and plug it into a positive source usually the fuse box works...

I have the whistler xtr 140. Its very basic and cheap yet gives a pretty good warning imo. My wires run down the whole dash haha. Plus I wasn't about to hardwire a radar detector to a leased car.

Interesting point about the metal tint. Currently I have no tint mainly because i'm trying my best to avoid being harassed by cops.

I have a lease vehicle too, is hardwire that permanent? Perhaps I should just stick to the cigarette lighter and the dash cord clutter.

    Not at all!

Just run a "add a circuit/fuse" to the fuse box (from a switched power source) & ground it on clean/bare metal & then run the wiring to the radar

If you don't wanna tear the dash apart to hide the wiring....just tuck it at the base of the windshield (use a credit card to push it down)

The amount of experience I have working on cars, I would personally avoid touching the fuse box because I wouldn't feel comfortable. Perhaps I can get one of the local guys to help me out ORRRR just stick to my cigarette lighter.

I did see a writeup on hardwiring it to the rear view mirror or rather interior lights through the sunglass holder. I wonder if I can manage to do that without burning the car down.

I had a V1 hardwired in my CC and now I have it in my A6. And I’m very satisfied with it performance right behind the rear view mirror.

For high performance at a decent price : The BEL RX65 and the Passport 8500 are the same units (slightly different menu/options), made by the same company, same performance. I have one of each. On the dash for now, I will remote mount them behind the grill one-of-these-days.....

V1 here as well, it is a little "chatty" but I also know where/when I need to use it. I've had it for probably 5 years and haven't gotten a ticket....knock on wood! I have mine hardwirded about my rearview mirror and run down to the fuse box using the "add a fuse". Literally took about 15 minutes to put in and you don't have to cut any wires or take anything apart. I had the Passport 8500 before that I'm much happier with the V1. Granted it's pricey, but they hold their value extremely well if you ever decide you don't need it anymore.

Valentine one for over 10 years now, had escorts and passports in the past and was happy, but really love the direction arrows of the Valentine and how the company keeps the platform the same so that you can always send yours in for upgrades as the technology improves. I should hardwire it, now I just deal with the cig cord and put a piece of industrial velcro on the dash of our vehicles so it can travel with me from car to truck.

For me I`ve got the valentine 1 and have it mounted on the passenger side visor. It`s high enough with a clear shot of the front, rear and side to side. Yes the Valentine 1 is expensive ($430) but it gives me a little piece of mind. Especially when my foot starts to get a little heavy!!
You know...if work was "FUN" it wouldn`t be called "WORK" now would it?

How'd you mount it on the visor? Doesn't the wire get in the way?
