Goin' down to Gulf Shores, AL

Hi everyone. In late august my girlfriend and I will be taking a trip to the Gulf Shores area for a few days. We will be driving down from St. Louis and stopping in Oxford, MS to visit my brother for a few days before heading down further to the beach.

My main question for anyone that has been to the Gulf Shores area is, would you stay in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach? I have seen that beach front hotels/resorts are much cheaper in Orange beach than GS, so that part is enticing, however I am willing to spend a little more if Gulf Shores is really the best place to go. Looking on a map they are both very close, and to be honest I am not sure why GS is really that better than orange beach... its just a few miles east..

Anyway, leave me some input please. Advice/recommendations/experiences would all be awesome!

personally i would just stay in orange beach, i live in perdido key florida which is right down the road & both are identical. If you hear of/find some where you want to go its easily driving distance. check out pensacola if you get a chance, couple nice restaurants/bars
