Thread: Sniper? Really?

  1. 05-17-2012 09:52 PM #1
Just caught this on CNN: http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/05/17...at-school-bus/

What kind of "sniper" uses a .22 with a backwards-mounted scope?

  2. 05-17-2012 11:41 PM #2
The same kind of people who use "high powered rifles" and "machine guns", and "assault rifles"...it's however the media sees it.

I've seen people misuse the term in far worse ways on gun enthusiast forums.

  4. 05-18-2012 07:58 AM #4
Where in the article does it say "Sniper"? Maybe it got edited?

The article here uses the term several times, and when you hover over the image of the Marlin Mod.60 further below it says "Sniper Rifle"

Technically isn't any rifle someone uses to shoot someone from a distance considered a "sniper" rifle? In Chechnya, snipers would use the .22LR round against the Russians.
While I hate it when the media tries to demonize weapons, I don't think they're way off base here... It's a stretch though. Of course we know why they use the word "sniper"...everyone remembers the belt way sniper. The mere use of the word boosts ratings and fear levels.

If you ask me, it just sounds like some jackass pointing a gun at kids. If I were telling the story, I certainly wouldn't say "sniper" anywhere in my dialogue.

I find this less offensive than the firearms industry labeling everything from rifles to backpacks as "tactical"

If the gunman was not concealed, he was not a sniper. News people getting it wrong is nothing new.

The Russians have a .22 sniper rifle they would use against the Chechen terrorists.

    http://www.izhmash.ru/eng/product/sv-99.shtml

The SV-99 sniper rifle chambered for 5.6 mm. rim-fire round is designed for special operations and sniper training at a distance up to 100 m.

It features a crank lock that makes it possible to shoot fast.

The rifle is fed from a 5 or 10 round plastic magazine.

The SV-99 is equipped with a silencer and a safety lock.

On the receiver there is a dove-tail optical sight mounting rail.

The stock is of special design with a flexible joint to quickly detach the buttstock from the forearm. The stock is symmetrical - for comfortable shooting both with the right and left hands. It's possible to adjust buttstock length, arm support position and cheek rest by length and height. Carrying sling swivels make it possible to fix the sling both from the right and left side of the stock. In the front part of the stock there is a fixture for quickly attachable bipods. In the buttstock there is a rear leg adjustable by height, designed to ensure stable position of the rifle during long-term observation of a target by a sniper. In travel position the rear leg folds in the buttstock and does not increase its overall dimensions.

The rifle is compact and fits a special case-backpack, when dismantled.
    ----

The Israelis have been using .22 sniper rifles for years as well:

    http://www.ruger1022.com/docs/israeli_sniper.htm

In 1987, the Intifada – the Palestinian uprising against the Israeli regime in the Occupied Territories – broke out, and involved mass violent clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians protestors. As a result, the Israeli security forces needed a weapon with a more potent firepower then the standard riot control metal covered rubber round, but at the same time less lethal then the standard issue 5.56 mm round of the M16/Galil assault rifles. So the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) searched for a 0.22 caliber accurate rifle that will be used to take out the key protest leaders by shooting them in the legs.

The Ruger 10/22, fitted with a X4 day optic, a full length suppressor and a Harris bipod was selected for this role and was due to be issued to all infantry oriented units, including both special and conventional forces. However, as often happens in the shoestring budget IDF, financial problems prevented the weapon’s mass distribution, and it was mainly issued to Special Forces (SF) units. Moreover, instead of using the rifle as a riot control weapon, as originally intended, the Israeli SF deployed the Ruger 10/22 more as a “Hush Puppy” weapon used to silently and effectively eliminate disturbing dogs prior to operations.

Oh I have no doubt about the uses of a .22 sniper platform, I was more curious as to how that bonehead gunman intended to accomplish anything with a scope facing the wrong direction.

Actually I've been wondering that for the past few days as well.

Scope comes with a warning. "Targets may be closer than they appear."

Funny, last night I went to see the Avengers and the big energy gun that agent Colson uses against Loki also had a backwards-facing scope on it. maybe this is a new trend.

looks like a CZ biathlon action. different barrel and stock, plus a suppressor, cool rifle.

When the female lead gives Marky Mark the rifle she said it was her late-husbands old hunting rifle. I think it was a larger caliber.

Squirrel hunting is pretty big down south, and they do mention in the movie that it's a .22
