A friend recently made me aware of this site: http://www.catchafire.org/

They call it "skills based" volunteering (as opposed to most of the volunteering I do, unless you count picking up dog poop as a skill ) Basically, it's a site that matches people with professional skills to small non-profits to do pro-bono work. I thought it'd be a great way to both give back a little, and pad the resume with some 'independent consulting' while I'm between jobs.

Anyone have any experience with the site specifically or something similar? Anyone volunteer their professional abilities, either to give back, gain new experiences, network, or just add to the resume? Or all of the above?

I'd be interested in hearing any stories if you got 'em

That concept looks really cool. I'll have to look into that site.

I need to check out this forum more often --- I forgot I even posted this

My friend who showed me the site just signed on to do round 2 of some free CXP strategy work with a non-profit. He said it's been great for him to get more references, network more, and gain some experiences that his current employer doesn't offer him.

I'm really thinking about signing on for a project.

Sounds like the thing to do. If you're between jobs, have the time, and can afford to do it... WHY NOT!

Not only does it "pad the resume" but it also fills the void in your resume. Even while unemployed you were still using your skills and fulfilling a need.

    Sounds like a win, win.

    I say DO IT!!!!!!
