Ordered some Depos for the EV

Ordered these last night EBAY Link. I have always wanted them and for the price it cannot be beat, other sellers want $280 plus $60-100 shipping from Europe. These are hear in So Cal. Here is a pic from eurotuner showing them:



Next I need to order the black grills like in the pic, and some red/clear tails, and ill be ready for the summer.

They look pretty nice. I have a set of the regular looking Depo factory replacement glass headlights with city lights but have not figured out how to power the city lights. Can you post some pics when they arrive?

Cool, I've been scanning ebay for some angel eyes for a while & haven't seen any US sellers yet. But then they came out with those new ones that mimic the Audi LED bar parking lights & now I can't decide which I like better.

Well got them installed today. The install was a breeze. The output of light is great . h7 kills the h4. I need to wire them so that low beam stays on when the high is switched. I did not wire up the halos yet, not sure i want to light them up. I defineitly want the black grills. Pics as promised. :thumb up:

Completely plug and play, disconnect harness behind light and plug into new lights. The plug for the harness does sit differently than the stock location, I needed to adjust the harness a bit so it was not tight on the passenger side (loosen clip, slide, tighten clip). Also has holes for attaching the wiring clips to the stock location on the back of the lights. The turns are plastic, the headlights are glass. I might light up the rings this weekend. Any idea how the DRL relay will affect this set up? Does the low beams stay on if the DRL relay has not been removed? Where are these made in? Germany?

DRL functions as factory, on with low beams. When switching from low beam to high beam the lows shut off and the highs turn on. I want to change them so it acts like other VWs with quad lights, lows stay on with highs. These are made by Depo http://www.depoautolamp.com/. They are a Taiwanese company. Next i will be buying my tail lights also Depos.

When I did the ecodes on my 2000, I was able to drill out the plugged location on the factory D-plug, inserted a wire terminal in there (this is where the Euro parking lights would normally get their 12V+ feed) and spliced the lead into the 12v+ for the parking lamp at each corner lamp. Nice and clean. Should probably work about the same here in this application.

For wiring the highs and lows to stay on at the same time, I believe the T4's electrical system design goes back to the same Central Electric 2 design used on vehicles like the later Mk2 Golf, etc. (my 2000 did have much of the same configuration at the fuse panel for fuses and relays). Assuming that's true, you can insert a jumper into the relay panel to make this work. I have a pic of it on my Mk2 GTI I think...PM me if you want and I can see if I can dig it up.

I painted the grills last night . Anyone know how to remove the upper vent grill on the top of the hood. I can't access it from under the hood. I started pulling it and it was snapping off but then got a lot of resistance and I did not want to break something.

I know on the earlier models (short nose like a '93) there are a few exposed screws to be undone but not sure on the later models.

I believe they're just s simple 2 wire system like city lights. I'll let him chime in but my guess is they didn't even have connectors on those wires. Probably just straight cut wire coming out for them

Judging from the above pics, the D-plug (which the OP said was plug-n-play) on the new lamps have four terminals, presumably 12V+ low beam, 12v+ high beam, 12v+ parking lights (probably the halos), and ground for all of them. I'm willing to bet (my memory is fuzzy on this though) that the ROW T4s that had internal parking lamps have the same four terminals and that the 12V+ parking lamp now corresponds to 12V+ for the halos. In the case of the NA T4s without internal parking lamps, we used the same plug but that one terminal was nonexistent on our lamps and on our D-plug it was empty and blocked off. I bet it's a matter of getting a wire into the plug and splicing it into 12v+ from the parking lamp 12V+ on our corner lamps.

Thanks to gti_matt for the tips and an email, I was able to make a bridge for the low beams to stay on with the highs. I also was able to wire up the halos as he posted earlier by drilling into the d plug and feeding a wire through. said wire was tapped into the parking lights off of the turn signal.
I will upgrade the halo bulbs to LEDs at a later time.

Looking good! So did the bridge work out with the same terminals that I described or was it any different? Nice job on the halos too. That's effectively what I did with my e-codes to fire up the little 5W internal parking lamps in the headlamp assembly.

Yes the bridge went identical to the image you sent me. I need to search the junkyards for that original clip. I had to make the bridge out of a paper clip and covered the exposed parts with electrical tape. Thanks again

That original jumper clip won't exist, as it's not a VW factory part. That was a special jumper that I borrowed and played with from an uber-rare Hella FF 7" round conversion kit for a mk2 Golf/GTI. Back around 1993 or so, Hella experimented with a new retrofit headlamp for the mk1 and mk2 Golfs that replaced the outer 7" round H4 (high and low beam) with a 7" round H1 (low beam only). Therefore you could only use the lamp on a GTI/GTD style vehicle that had the inner lamps in the grille (or retrofit a regular Golf to have grille lamps or some other high beam triggered auxiliary lamp). Part of this kit was the jumper that jumped the connections at the fuse panel to keep the lows on with the highs, and as we've now seen the T4 retained the same general design of the electrical system which permits you to mimic the same thing. (Earlier Mk2 Golfs prior to the pate 1980s CE2 system and all Mk1s used a different jumper in the relay panel that wasn't a metal clip type thing but a small wire setup with three connections.)

But now that we know it works,you can probably rig up a slightly more elegant bridge connection with real wire and proper terminals on the ends.

Looks great! Too bad I just changed my OEM headlights to the Depo Euro H4 beam.

Can you send me some instructions on how to bridge the harness to activate my city lights? I have the euro switch already, I know I have to tap the turn signal power, just don't know how to get the power to the city lights. Thanks.

If you look at the dplug, you will see 3 wires and a blank, the blue wire is my pass through wire. per gti_matt's info I drilled out the blank. I then took a wire with a mini female spade terminal (link of size I used) plugged it where the blank would be on the d plug for the headlight. Then I ran the wire throught the hole in the dplug and attached the dplug to the headlight. Then tapped into the parking light positve (grey wire) for power. The halo/city lights share a common ground with the headlamps. Good luck.

Heheh...that terminal is the same thing I used IIRC too. It doesn't quite snap into the d-connector but if you make the hole you drill small enough, there's enough friction to hold it in place "good enough". The blue splices that you spliced into the 12V+ parking lamp wire are also exactly what I used too.

I'd recommend replacing that splice connector with a proper heat shrink piece. Those squeeze blue units are meant be temporary and definitely not exterior usage other than for temporary fixes.

They are already covered in silicone and wrapped to protect from the elements. my corrado had the same connectors with silicone for 5 years and when I removed the euros the wire was like new.
