a cam sensor will stop the thing dead in its tracks!

I need a fresh set of eyes/ears on my non-start issue...
Ok, background:
'98 Jetta GLX w/148k. Died while pulling into parking spot 3wks ago. Has not started since. Cranks all day but does not turn over.
What I have done so far:
Checked/added gasoline
Replaced crankshaft sensor
Replaced coolant temp sensor
Replaced hi and low oil press sensors
Replaced Fuel pump relay, fuel filter, heard fuel pump priming, also pulled fuel delivery hose and confirmed gas pumping during cranking
Swapped newish UM chip for old fxnal OEM chip (no change)
In the meantime, I have also replaced valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, oil cooler o-rings, oil n filter, deleted evap, replaced vacuum lines, etc...
I sprayed MAF cleaner into air box/MAF intake, no start...
SO...could this really be a coilpack instant fail??
ALL SUGGESTIONS MUCH APPRECIATED!!

thanks for replies!...only code it threw at time of dying was the familiar too lean mixture code...of course I have not had it rescanned since...trying to avoid having to pay to have it towed and have no vag-com possessing friends! May go ahead and replace cam sensor, I pulled it and it looked ancient...all covered in burnt oil etc. Not sure whether tb hums, will check this afternoon...

On the 12v, the ecu will default to the crank position sensor, retard timing, screw with secondary fuel injection, and store a code. But the car will still start and run. Will also take a few more turns before it fires when starting.
Have checked in regional forums to see if there is some kind of group or club semi local to you? Might be somebody on here that you don't know in person that would come scan your car for a few bucks.
Are you positive that you are getting spark? Can't remember if you checked that in the other threads you had. Just pull each spark plug, put it back on the wire, ground the thread of the spark plug to the block, and have someone crank. (also pull the fuel pump fuse/relay so you don't vapor lock/flood/wash the bores)

i had a similar no start issue on my vr6 about a week ago. checked everything.
Turned out i had a bad ignition switch. It would crank all day but never start up. the wierd thing was when i turned the switch to the on positon all the engine electronics would hum and wake up, so i thought it was all good. The way i found the problem was by connecting a volt meter to the positive and neg. pins on the coil harness. when key was switched on i was getting battery volatge but when i was cranking the engine the voltage would drop to zero. the coil should be getting volatge during cranking.
Might be a shot in the dark but you can give it a try.
you can test this by unplugging the harness from the ignition switch and jumping the pins.

Thank you all soo much!! My car is back up and running like a top!!
I really appreciate the direct and informative suggestions I received in troubleshooting this doozy of a problem!
So...it turns out, much to my chagrin, that my girlfriend innocently yet accurately diagnosed the problem weeks ago, as did a recent poster, in that my ignition switch had indeed crapped out again! I pulled a spark plug and told her to crank it and not expect it to start, as I was simply looking for spark (as suggested above), and I was so intently staring at the plug that I hardly noticed that the car started up! lol I told her to kill it, dropped the plug back in, and she fired right up. She smoked for quite a bit, but considering all of the intake mani/TB cleaning and new gaskets/oil etc, this was no surprise. Now after several victory runs around the neighborhood, all seems well and I can move on towards my next project with her
I'm gonna attempt to start a new thread with some pics of items of potential concern I noticed during the troubleshooting and rehab process. Feel free to throw in yer 2 cents there as well!! Thanks again Jay
