Thread: Buying a car out of state and driving it back?

  1. 05-20-2012 11:38 PM #1
    Hello sirs of TCL

I'm about to buy an E92 M3 located in Tampa, Florida and I will be flying down to pick it up and drive it home all the way up to the beautiful New Jersey, with a full photo-documentation of the trip. Tomorrow if the PPI checks out I will be putting a deposit on it and flying down one of these weekends to pick it up. Hopefully someone here has bought a car out of state and could shine some light on this topic as this is my first used car purchase and I have a few questions.

    1) Can I get a temporary tag in florida from the DMV there to drive the car home? How long would it take to get that tag?

    2) I read that I have to contact insurance prior to getting the car and have proof of insurance in order to get the temp tag in florida. Is this correct?

    3) When do I pay for the tax? When the title is transferred and bill of sale is made in florida or when I apply to register the car in NJ when I return?

    4) Is there anything else I need to cover before I leave Florida to drive up other than the Bill of sale, proof of transferring title, insurance, Social security and license?

    5) Any advice on any roads to drive up from florida to new jersey?

That's all I could think of off the top of my head, if anyone can help me out here let me know, thanks

Edit: Because I know I'd hate a boring, full of text thread like this, here are some (very small) pictures of the e92 for sale that I'm about to purchase. Thanks again

I flew to Little Rock, bought it, and drove it back to Dallas. Here's how it went.

    1. Dealer put a temp tag on it that was good for about six weeks, plenty time to register it in Texas. Sounds like you're buying from an individual so I know this doesn't help much. My guess is you'll get a temp tag when you transfer title at the FL DMV.

    2. I called my insurance company while closing the deal and started coverage effective immediately.

    3. I paid no sales tax in Arkansas. Paid it in Texas at registration. Too bad. Lower rate there.

    4. That's all I've got.

if the tax rates vary(ie lower in the purchase state) you will pay the difference when you go to register it in your home state. just make sure "tax" is itemized on your bill of sale.
pennsylvania tried to collect their 7% after i paid the 5% or 6% in michigan...

temp tag should be issued from fla upon title transfer, and you should have no problem cruising up jersey with them. speeding on the otherhand...

insure it upon title transfer; though i think you have some leeway but why risk it especially with that nice of a car.
