Transmission stuck in reverse

Hello. I just did a complete rebuild on my 1.8t, and am now in the process of reinstalling everything. I've been doing work using the Bentley. When I removed the transmission, I put the tranny into maintenence mode as the book suggested. Now that I've put everything back in the car, and got the cables and counterweight installed, I shifted through the gears to make sure everything was engaging correctly. I also put the switch back over into running position. The tranny felt like it was binding, and when I put it into reverse gear, it locked into place and won't come out. Any ideas on how to get it to pop back out? Thanks.

For clarification, the car is a 2000 1.8t Beetle with a O2J Transmission.
