just changed the timing chain tensioner, wiring all the way to the ecu is fine.
code comes on at cold starts, once it warms up, i can clear the code.
Car is a 96 vr6 turbo with a UM tune
its always ran fine until about a month ago, now it feels like timing is off(although its not) at higher rpms/WOT

Is there a way to check with the vag com if the timing is off? Because the car was running fine, this happened out f nowhere.
#4
The reason it goes away hot is because the oil thins out and changes the timing window.
Oil PSI directly will reflect base time.
or
The sensor is actually bad.

How is it that the timing just goes out? This car dynoed at 450 whp! Car was always driving great, then I would randomly see the code, clear it and that was the end of it for another week or so.
How could I test the sensor without having to replace it?

An ohm meter as per the repair manual.
RTFB!

"book" not Bentley. But that's close enough you got the point.
Have a shop scope the sensor is best to know it's good.
Good Luck

What I don't get is how my car was running great, and one day, the "timing jumped"??
I took the upper cover off and checked the timing from the crank pulley and everything checked out...
Checked out the timing based on the mark in the transmission and it seems a bit off. (why the timing marks on the crank pulley and bell housing? I don't even want to know...)
Reset the timing, now the check engine light doesn't come on AS MUCH...but drives even worse!!!
I'm taking the Trans off and starting from scratch w new chains but this is frustrating...

Use the index tooth on sprocket and make sure the reluctor 60-2 teeth wheel is at 6:00 position.
Also verify the harmonic is at its proper location on the snout of the crank.
This is true TDC. unlike some flywheels may indicate.
Then be sure to set the slack proper on the back side of the oil tensioner up top, so that when oil pressure commences the cam sensor and cams will be at perfect position.
Verify the cam reluctor pick up trigger is not stripped and in proper alignment.
This will stop the correlation error and range performance issue.
Hope this helps and puts in perspective.

i don't think 96 has a 60 tooth
i think you used solid core plug wires without the proper resistor plug ends, emi causes interference
#12
Oh yes it does and for that matter so does an OBD1 1993 ABA or AAA in 1992.
60 - 2 teeth blocked for TDC at 6 o'clock position.
The 259 means its OBD 2
258 series would be OBD 1
Either one are G28 read.
