i had a thought that may be the case and bang on you were correct, found a yellow sticker with another one directly under coated in oil etc. Gingerly peeled it off and cleaned it up and voila it is an EXCHANGE sticker with the statement MAY BE USED WITH ENGINE CODE HT
so i am going to gather it is an HT

HT motors were used in 85 GTI/GLIs, although I'm not sure if it's the same for Canada. The RD superceded it in 86, although there aren't really any major differences that I'm aware of. The RD has a better cam and 4-2-1 exhaust setup. The HT had the 4-1.

Not sure if that sticker means it's an HT or that it can be swapped in place of an HT without issue. Do a compression test and you should be able to semi-conclude whether it's a high compression motor or not.

thanks after i posted i did a search and as you said that is an 85 motor. I suspect that it may be a reverse swap or ? The compression test is what i will do this coming weekend and I will let you all know the results, i'm sure your all waiting with bated breath for the nOOb to find out

So i can check the compression or simply check the exhaust setup i gather?

    Thanks again for the info

A pic of where the code should be

    [IMG][/IMG]

also there is another sticker on the block which has a vw stamp and states vw remanufacturing
you can see a sliver of it in the pic bottom left which leads me to belief it is not a gex but still not sure

    Thanks
