I took the car out for a little spin about 8 miles. We where about .5 of a mile from the house and there is a section where you have to stop on a little bit of a hill. I stalled the car due to the new Dm clutch then headed to the house and the car started to run like crap. I hooked up VAGCOM and had this code:
    17748.P1340 camshaft position sensor-G40/ Engine speed sensor-G28: incorrect allocation(#1)

I swapped out the 2 cam position sensors and cleared the code and started the car and it still ran like crap. I just happen to have a new Cam position sensor(hall sensor) so I swapped it out in both cam positions one at a time and cleared the code and the car still runs like crap.

Is there a way to check(test) with vagcom to see if its one of the engine speed sensors?

typically if an ESS is bad you wont be able to start the car...now granded i have only dealt with this on 1.8t's...but the tell tell sign if an ESS is bad is that when you crank the car over the tach will not move....

you had the head off didnt you? are you sure that your not off a tooth on the timing? i know several people who have played hell with timing 24v VRs....

    good luck mate!

G40 is the camshaft position sensor towards the front of the engine

    Is it loose?

Do you get the same error when the cable is disconnected from the connector?

No its not loose, I know that was a common problem: the sensors getting loose.

the car runs like crap either way..

Runs rich and idles like crap and vaccum is only-2 or so

I replaced the chains and tensioner and sliders. I removed the valve cover and the chain is tight as can be and everything else looks good.

I'll check TDC on # 1 tomorrow when i get home from work. And I have never seem a car with chains jump a tooth. Now a worn belt is different.

I'll try to test the speed sensors..

Thanks again for all the help.

Its a fresh 3.3 forged motor built by RAI motorsports. I did not personally check the intermediate gear. I did check the timing, tensioner, guides before i installed the valve cover.

So I removed the valve cover and coilpacks and plugs, and set the motor to TDC on the #1 Cylinder. Now keep in mind that I run a the Nuespeed aftermarket crank pulley, but when I installed it I put a paint marker spot on it so I could time the crank.

I don't have the cam timing tool so i used a ruler and it slide it pretty easy when I got the motor timed and then I checked the chain rollers between the cam timing marks and got 16 but the marks dont line up properly

Is it possible that the chain is to tight with the new tensioner and guides? I have heard of this problem with guys running head spacers-But I am not running one but the chain seems to be super tight?

jay, did you rotate both cam adjustment sprockets before setting the timing? if i remember correctly both need to be rotated towards the firewall until they stop, then you can continue setting the upper timing, 16 rollers, etc. its been a few years since i put my cams in but i did remember rotating the sprocket

Out of time. Off a tooth. Do over. Very common.

Also, the oil you mentioned on your PM is very common on a newly rebuilt engine until everything wears together and seals up. Problem is, many bored motors never seal right ever again.

i see u have a bentley, did u follow EVERY step to the T, obviously not.
not to be rude, but you should not do a job like that without doing everything precisely.
do every step, not just tdc and cam orientation.
