So I'm putting a new-to-me diesel engine in my bunny.

I was thinking about painting it Detroit Diesel alpine green...just a bit darker than the color of the car, Mountain Green.

But what would be the factory VW color, if there is such a thing?

The old lump that's being pulled, poor thing didn't last very long :

I love the DD Alpine green. I would do it. Remember DD paints everything green.

Hehe, engine enamel doesn't stick very well to aluminum. I think I'm keeping the head bare.

But the block, valve cover and oil pan will be green. I think the pulleys will be too.

The header will get what I always use, wet graphite film.

Everything else...brackets, water pump, water outlets,... will be black.

And if I decide to put the timing cover back on...that will be green too.

    Thanks for posting that up

This post made my heart skip a jump! I am not sure if I ever mentioned, but there was once a point where I was building another diesel motor.... allow me to share a couple photos

the green had long rusted away at that point (typical New England) but you get the idea! I lived in this bus for a summer once, then started trying to do this rebuild... taking parts from one to make the other run properly. It ended up being too expensive for me to finish, and I traded it for the Micro Minnie Winnie to move out West.

As far as a color for older VW diesels, the lighter green on the end caps of the transmission was always the color that I imagined as "stock" - not that I have ever seen a motor this color, so I suppose I cannot explain where that idea had come from.

So glad to have met you!
    Your friend, Anja

Sweet! Waw, thats quite an undertaking...trying to get a bus that size going, nevermind converting it into an RV! You sure know how to wrench!

I don't think VW ever painted any of the water-cooled engines. Kind of sad really. I know they used to paint their air-coolers and marine engines.

The detroit diesel green sure is a lot darker than the color of the car, but I think it looks good.

Here's your trusty little 1.5 Anja, in it's new jacket.

Didn't VW paint the 1.6 diesel blocks green? I still have patches of green on mine.

From what i understood, volkswagen would replace motors on warranty with re-manufactured engines and they would be painted green. However i stand to be corrected...

I've had two that were a nasty lime green (factory)

OP por-15 makes a nice deep green that will stick to a head. The plan sounds good - green/black will look hard as . . . .

Awwww! Wow it looks fabulous! I cannot wait to see both of you again, and I thank you very much for he compliment ::beams:: I certainly do my best though I am still learning. My strengths seem to be keeping an open mind and not being afraid to try (and fail of course... I don't think that I told you what happened to my original inj pump and why I had to replace it.... Sigh.) we'll see how well I do with my aba swap

I know you'll take great care of her. Keep it up!!!!

Yeah, you never did tell me what happened to your original injector pump.

I'm hoping to have it running this weekend. But I'm not going to rush.

My diesels cat yellow, but i always liked cummins onan green got a few cans in the garage. I believe they use it on their genset engines.

And i work on these badboys mostly. International green/teal/blue but i'm afraid if you painted it this color it will break down all the time.

Detroit would probably look nicer with your cars colour too.
Anyways for diesel and always have loved your car by the way!

This is rustoleum green. You can also use the tractor green they sell at walmart. That and some self etching primer should hold up for years.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can really get things done quick!

I am not too far behind you, but I have wiring to figure out.

I predict that it will be many months before I finish this! Thank goodness that I have a VW expert on hand that is kind enough to let me pick his brain at all random hours of the day. I feel like I've learned so much already and I have barely touched it.

Can't wait to meet your rabbit in person!!
