Thread: How should I pass HDMI cables from inside to exterior of house?

  1. 05-22-2012 11:16 PM #1
So I just purchased a new TV to mount poolside (just outside my bedroom). Ive got a mount, and some HDMI from monoprice that is rated to pass through the walls. A coworker suggested that I run a wireless signal to the television which will run from my cablebox inside the bedroom approximately 10 feet, through a wall, outside to the TV. Ive never been a fan of wireless, but is the technology good enough so that I should consider it, or should I just cut a hole in the wall and pass it through to outside?

Pics will be posted in a few days once everything is together.

I believe there are some expensive wireless hdmi devices that work well, but inexpensive one's are probably garbage.

You could try a hdmi->ethernet adapters, then hook it to a powerline (ethernet through your power lines) to avoid drilling holes. So it would go HDMI -> ethernet -> powerline (inside wall outlet) -> powerline (outside wall outlet) -> coverted back to HDMI. There are powerline adapters that work very well for ethernet.

Meh Jesse, I don't think that's the best idea.

Just run the hdmi, if the OP's worried wrap it in either automotive wire wrap or something like this Shanghai stuff

Monoprice might even have exterior HDMI.

Yea I agree.. just trying to come up with a wireless solution. No one likes drilling holes through their exterior walls.

I wouldn't run HDMI cable outside. If you take a lightning strike, it will trash your whole home theater.

well if you have a tv outside obviously there is something covering everything for the tv.. just drill a hole and run the wires out if you can get easy from inside the house...

What are you trying to do exactly? Stream stuff? You could grab a cheapo xbox360 /ps3/mediaplayer/mac mini and use your home network to watch whatever you have on you computer/external hardrives. If wireless lag is an issue you could just copy the file(s) to the console hd through the network or just use a thumb drive.

I ended up using a wireless HDMI trasmitter. It was about $200, and it works flawless. Thanks for the suggestions!
