I just got my first car, an 86 jetta gl a couple months ago and it was running fine. I parked it for about 2 weeks and it wouldn't start. Denver Fox is my homie and he's gotten tons of help from you guys, so maybe you can help me out too? More info here:

Heh, yeah, they weren't all that helpful, were they?

Keep in mind that your Jetta probably has a slightly different injection system - I think the Fox's CIS-E system is unique though similar to MkII CIS.

One thing to check - there is a screen in the fuel lines at the fuel distributor, it's there to catch larger chunks left in the gas tank from assembly. I forget exactly where it is, and don't know for sure that your Jetta has one, but given what you said about gunky fuel I bet if you have one it's pretty nasty.

Definitely clean your injectors. Might wanna pull the tank and have a pro clean and coat it.

Check the rest of your fuel lines - you might have a crack somewhere that's leaking pressure.

    Keep us posted~!

I'm also interested to hear what's causing your problems. My CIS-E Fox runs and I drive it everyday, but it runs like crap, despite lots of my time and money spent during the last year trying to make this otherwise great car run properly.

You might try posting your question on the 8 valve forum as well:

Had the same problem w/ my 88 Wagon when I first got it. Spent about 3 weeks chasing my tail trying to figure it out. Finally took it to a garage that specializes in WC VW's and they fixed it in 1 minute....... Evidently the PO had tried to do a tuneup on it and had reversed 2 of the plug wires. switched them back and now she runs PERFECT!! Have been working on cars for most of my 49 years on this planet and still missed something so simple.

Start with the basics, it doesnt sound like it sat for too long, but to check if you're getting adequate fuel. Your in- tank fuel pump might not be working. If both pumps work, here are a few other things to try.
Pull the intake boot off the fuel dizzy, then, very carefully, pull the injectors (if you have new o-rings) if not, dont do it, those old orings will crumble if you look at em cross eyed. Pull your fuel pump relay and run a jumper wire between the 2 larger connectors in the relay panel and your fuel pump should stay on for testing. Then, with the injectors out, in a container of sorts to catch fuel lift on the airflow plate. You should have an even spray pattern to all 4 injectors. If not unscrew them and clean em. You can soak them for a few minutes in CRC clean-r-carb works best. (87 octane fuel in a can) then use the tube to spray them out (the can has enough pressure to open the injectors)
I noticed in the pics, a lack of an isv, i cant remember if they used those back then, or if they were in a different spot. I remember a couple years ago the one in my caddy went out so i just deleted it. It was a bit cranky for the first 30 seconds of start up, but the problem went away. i hope some of this helps.

I'm gonna try to clean my injectors. I got new o-rings, holders, and insulators. I also got the CRC clean-r-carb and the special injector puller. The problem is I cant seem to get the stubborn things out. I put down a couple folded rags down on the cover and pried my hardest but they just wont come out. I even sprayed the holders with the carb cleaner to try to loosen up the o-ring, but it still wont budge.

Any tips or advise on getting these dirty injectors out?

Try all that others posted. I have had problems with vacuum leaks causing all kinds of running issues. The in-tank pump can cause terrible running issues too.

I had a JUST like the one you're having to deal with now, except mine had a dent where some of the stickers are beneath the trunk lid.

They will come out. Just try and get the straighest pull you can get out of it. When i did mine i ended up using a set of long curved needlenose pliers and a socket for leverage.

Edit: be really careful when pulling the injectors though. I broke one off and it really fooked my day up!

I think there's actually a specific tool that gets under there so you can pull straight out.

    About 8 to 10 dollars.

They have my car when they pry my dead cold fingers from the steering wheel.

he said he has the tool already.

Try using some PB blaster, kroil oil, or deep creep penetrant spray on the injector o-rings. soak the hell of them, wiggle them a bit and rotate them with a wrench... wait ten mins, try to pull them, if they won't budge repeat the process. They will come out.

As to the no start, you really need to do a lot of diagnosis and post up what you did and what the result was.
