Curious who had good coverage in Helen - what is good coverage? Pretty much anyone who had no problem loading data or making calls all over town is what i'm interested in.

I'm about to switch to Verizon or Sprint for the iphone so this poll is 2 fold, to see if either had better service than my ATT and who had good coverage in town.

I realize it may just be a function of the area and the hills and what not so it's unscientific really.

      Thanks,

ps: only click to vote if you had reliable service for your carrier! Thanks again!

its the influx of people. the towers can't handle it.
I had full bars all weekend on att, but couldnt load anything unless I was on wifi at my cabin.
But on monday morning after most had left my phone worked fine on 3g.

I had pretty good coverage throughout Helen with my Sprint 4s, and excellent coverage at my cabin. Although I brought a femtocell to improve it the DSL wasn't even fast enough to use it.

you make a good point brother, i didn't even think about the # of people using the towers.

Glad to hear about the Sprint coverage, i'm leaning Sprint 4s iphone for the unlimited data.

I've got ATT on the old unlimited plan, 115 to get out now, or wait 2 months and get out of it for free.

Really torn -- ATT has just been so awful for cell coverage in outlying areas, esp on road trips on freeways.

i went from Milwaukee to Albany NY and the coverage on the freeway through PA, and NY and all along 80 was HORRIBLE.

I65 south to Georgia was decent, but i'm guessing Verizon will be even better based on the head to head iphone tests on youtube from CNET.

really? If I stick to major freeways I usually have good coverage. I usually stream Pandora on all my road trips and have no issues buffering or having my music cutout.

I was streaming pandora all the way up 75 to helen and didn't have an issue till right out side of helen.

I do the same thing to H20 every year.

Yeah, it may have something to do with PA and the north being hilly and mountainous compared to florida being flat --- or maybe they have spent more $ on towers in Florida than in the boonies of PA and NY and the upper midwest and NE.

Almost entirely across PA, i couldn't stream pandora or iheart from east to west and west to east. it sucked.

      Yup -

      I have AT&T

We got there early Friday morning, and service was great. By Friday night, I had 4 bars, and horrible connectivity.

The 1 cell phone tower for the valley was extremely over loaded. By Saturday night, after the rain, I'd assume people took off, since I had connectivity again.

I have AT&T and had a decent time making calls. Texts and data were a different story though, not good at all.

I have AT&T. Had full bars & "4G". Could not make calls regularly and data and texting didn't work for squat. Probably the only part of the weekend I didn't enjoy.

i was able to get calls and text just fine with verizon but 4G was not picking up and i couldn't load anything on the internet most of the weekend.

i was usually only getting 2-3 bars in town.

You should have an option on the poll for the majority of us who DIDN'T have cell service, haha

Like everyone else it seems, my phone (AT&T GoPhone) claimed it had 4-5 bars yet I had to hold my phone in one spot in the hotel to send texts (on top of a lamp in the corner; couldn't find any other spot anywhere throughout Helen), and when trying to make a phone call from several different locations it would say dialing but never actually dial. I just ended up leaving my phone in the hotel most of the time and merely using my phone as a clock.

AT&T (iPhone 4) was spotty at best.. it'd show multiple bars, but not follow through. Didn't lie and try to show me 3G half the time at least, it either said Edge or nothing at all but w/ bars

      No data all weekend
50% success with calls all weekend
80% success with texts. This seemed to be the best way to get in touch with people.

edit: friends/vendors with Verizon seemed to do okay. Keller VW was using an app/dongle to process credit card purchases, and they were having some success

I voted Verizon because texts and voice worked fine all weekend. 3G was another story though. I have a 4S and during peak times like Saturday afternoon I couldn't load anything. I tried putting a few pics on Instagram and they would all time out.

Also brought with me a 4G T-Mobile hotspot and that didn't work either. Looks like EDGE was all it would pick up so I just shut it off. Tried tethering the iPad to my 4S and couldn't even get one YouTube video to load.

I never thought I'd say this but, Sprint worked pretty well compared to all my ATT iPhone having friends. Trust me, no one is more surprised than me as Sprint sucks the long hard one...

I'll be leaving a Dixie cup in Miami next year, running a string with me up to SOWO and attaching to another Dixie cup. Anyone interested, I'll charge $5 per call.

I have verizon& had no problems at all with phone service or using data on my phone.

All my non verizon iphone friends looked lost without their service.

my att iphone 4s had .02mbps down on saturday and couldnt get any upload. My friend's verizon phone couldnt send pics either... I showed full bars and 3g. we had wifi at our condo. But yes, as previous poster said the towers cant handle the mass amount of users.

I had solid coverage, but data want really working during the daytime. It worked decent Friday afternoon, late at night, and worked perfect Sunday evening and Monday.

I'm sure the cell companies are wondering what the eff happened to their towers there over weekend. We just straight up overloaded their capacity.

Our group got there Thursday and had perfect signal that day as soon as people started coming in we had full signal but no service. We all had different carries but I have AT&T and no issues Thursday.

Verizon crushing the competition in terms of the poll and people claiming to have solid coverage all weekend, not really shocking, may make my decision easier, Sprint is still tempting with the unlimited data :-/

Choosing a cell carrier by the events at one town that you'll probably spend 2-3 days a year in is not really the best method. I would be taking a close look at what your co-workers and neighbors at home have and how they find the coverage. In my job I was asked to test the 3 carriers we have contracts with (At&t, Verizon, and Sprint) for their coverage on a 300+ acre hospital/university campus. I can tell you that the winner on campus here was Sprint by a very large margin,(Sprint have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars securing sites near our campus) but that doesn't hold true in most other parts of town here, in many places elsewhere Verizon or At&t had better service but since I spend most of my time around work or my home, and service was acceptable at home I chose Sprint personally. (we recommend Sprint to staff on-call here as well, but in the end they make their own choice among the three)
