Thread: Anyone ever install a trailer hitch on your Jetta?

  1. 05-23-2012 05:57 PM #1
I need to make a 1000 mile trip and don't have enough stuff for a professional moving truck, don't want to tow my car on a trailer, and PODS wants over $2200 for the move. I'm now looking at a small uHual trailer but a hitch put on my car. They have a price of $350 to install the hitch for a Jetta although I'm guessing I could get it done cheaper somewhere else. Anyone else ever install one? Have any issues?

There are mk4 jetta hitches on eBay ,but I don't know anything more than that. Roughly $125.

Look for CURT Trailer Hitch #110700 ?

when i bought my gti there was a uhaul hitch installed. they drilled holes in the spare tire area and bolted it to that as well as subframe i think (it was a while ago)

i have a hitch on my car. i bought it from etrailer.com site. you can actually install it yourself if you have the drill tools and the right size bit. I only use it to haul my mountain bike and i think the car can handle a small trailer. what are you carrying on the trailer by the way?

Just some household items. Some chairs (wood and plastic), an outdoor metal table, a side and coffee table, clothes, a coat rack if it will fit, etc. Nothing too heavy in it's own right that weight would be an issue. I'm trying to compare the expense (real and otherwise) of moving what won't fit in my car vs just replacing what is lost. All the books and records (1000s) already made the move and most of my current furniture is going to family or the Salvation Army.

I think you are ok to tow it. just don't drive too fast when towing and tighten them up well and put some protection.

see if you can get the 4x8 trailer enclosed from uhaul. you need to have the lights connected too.
