So this weekend I'm doing my timing belt, cam seal and valve cover gasket on my 88 16V. I've never done any of these before.
I've got time and my friend Bentley along for the ride; anything I should be aware of or look out for? Thanks! Wish me luck.

make damn sure you know how to line up everything after you install the timing belt, cause its an interference motor, meaning if you screw up aligning things just a little bit, youll bend valves and smack pistons....enjoy!

Here's a dumb question i just thought of--if I'm changing the water pump do I need to drain all my coolant?

You'll find out very fast when you take the water pump off if you need to drain coolant lol.

But yes, you should drain unless you just wanna take the bottom radiator hose off that goes to the water pump. That's what I did.

yeah, good luck...i'm doing my first timing belt change this month as well, though mine is FAR less critical, as my 8V is a non-interference motor...
