Hi all - I've noticed recently that the steering wheel in my '02 GTI VR6 has developed play front to back, not necessarily side to side. In other words, I can be stopped and jiggle the wheel in and out (or a bit up and down) a fair bit without making any attempt to move the front wheels. So this appears to be a problem with the connection between the steering wheel and the shaft. The adjustment lever is nice and tight in its 'lock down' position, so it's probably not that.

Anyone else experience this and have a fairly straightforward fix? I'm imagining I'll to have to remove the cover on the underside and re-tighten some bolts or clamps? Otherwise, if it involves removing the section that contains the airbag, I'll likely defer to my mechanic.

Any suggestions (and picts?) would be appreciated!

find a diy, remove airbag, and check the nut that holds your wheel on.

Thanks for the input! After reading a bit more about this and checking out some of the YouTube vids out there, it doesn't seem as scary of a job as I thought. I'll tackle it as soon as I can get a couple of free hours together.

    Thanks,
    Paul
