I've had the brake pad warning light intermittedly come on and off in the last week.
I took the front left wheel off and had a quick look and there is still 10mm of pad on the outer, also the connection going to the pad seems to be fine.

Is this warning light just an over precaution from VW and I still have plently of meat left on my brake pads and km's, or should I thoroughly check them all or take it to the mechanic to be on the safe side.

I'd check them all just to be safe.

Check the back too since the rear brakes wear out faster on these cars.

I recall reading somewhere that the pad thickness sensors are only on the rear. I would check there first.

I had a warning light when my brakes were good and it turned out to be a short in one of the wires connected to a sensor.

In the end as in Incrementals case it was a bad connection in the sensor wiring, so they just replaced the harness.
Took 20min and they didn't charge me anything.
