I have a 1996 2.0L 5sp Jetta and my transmission went out about a month ago and to the point now of being sick and tired of only having one vehicle haha. Trying to find a replacement (doesn't even have to be perfect) has been a royal pain. Trying to figure out what years are interchangeable with the transmission to see if it'll make it even a slight bit let of a thorn in my side trying to locate one for a halfway decent price, currently on one income since can't go back to work till I have a running car and my husband is a mechanic so thankfully it's only parts we're paying for.

Used transmissions are available, you just need to look. Have you tried the Vortex For Sale Forum, Regional For Sale Forum, and CraigsList?
To keep it simple, the easiest way is to look for another 5-speed manual transmission from a MKIII with a 2.0L engine. Those manual transmission have a transmission type code stamped on the bottom (AMC, CHE, DFQ). Any of those will fit and function in your car exactly like the original.
You didn't post where you are, but for example (I'm in SoCal), there was a Vortex ad for a MKIII 020 manual transmission for $50.
And, there's a Craigslist ad from a guy near here who is parting out a 96, and wants $250 for the 2.0L engine with the manual transmission, and a new clutch.

i had completely spaced that I had not put where I'm located. I'm in Bremerton, WA and willing to travel a bit to get a decent transmission if it's for the right price.
