Thread: FS Callaway Turbo VW GTi Wheels - Gold BBS RA's 15x7 w/ Orig Goodyear VR50 tires - RARE and Classic

  1. 05-26-2012 02:14 PM #1
Hello all, I'm selling a set of 4 ORIGINAL wheels from an '85 VW Callaway Turbo GTI for my buddy who recently sold the car. As far as I know, these are the special edition wheels that ONLY came on the Callaway cars (at least in the US) and were ordered through the VW dealers as a "dealer installed" option (well Callaway actually). Please correct me if I'm wrong. The BBS RA wheels were a $940 option back in '84 (for '85 model year) and the original Goodyear 205/50/15 VR50 tires were $782. I know the tires are typically not "worth" anything of this vintage but they do show evidence that these wheels are THE REAL MCCOYS. The wheels are 15" x 7" BBS RA's with a 35mm offset as stamped on each wheel. These wheels have a 2" lip on them from the gold painted edge to the edge of the wheel for a deep dish look. These are the 15x7's and not to be confused with similar looking RA's that are 15x6 or 14x6. The wheels are a direct fit for any A1, A2 or A3 VW with 4 lugs. If I recall correctly, they should be 4x100.

    Condition of the wheels:
Wheel #1 is a 8 out of 10 for the face and 8 out of 10 for the barrel.
Wheel #2 is a 8 out of 10 for the face and 7 out of 10 for the barrel.
Wheel #3 is a 7 out of 10 for the face and 6 out of 10 for the barrel.
Wheel #4 is a 7 out of 10 for the face and 4 out of 10 for the barrel. For wheel #4, the face is fairly clean but the rear drum has some corrosion and some of the gold coating is coming loose. The good thing is the corrosion is on the back side and with the wheel mounted on the car, you won't see it. I also have 2 interior metal wheel covers that can be mounted on the inside of the barrel to prevent brake dust from reaching the front face of the wheel so this can be used to completely cover the corrosion. These covers (2 ea) where used by the original owner to keep brake dust from pitting the front dishes. Very effective as demonstrated by the clean faces. If you have any specific questions, please ask. I can send you whatever picture angles you want so you feel confident about the purchase. ALSO ALL WHEELS ARE STRIAGHT AND TRUE as the eye can tell.

Condition of the tires: Being that these are the original tires from '84, the rubber is a little stiff and probably going to be loud and not too sticky. These tires are probably best to use for shows to grab those extra points. As far as I can tell, there are NO PATCHES or damage to the tires. It just shows normal wear on the tread blocks. No cupping or scuffs from bad alignment. These are great tires considering their age.

This set comes with everything you see in the pics including the 4 BBS original center caps in perfect shape plus the two interior wheel covers mentioned earlier.

Here is an article that talks about the incredible car which references these wheels. This is the real deal so don't low ball me.

Here are a few pics of the actual wheels for sale. Please email me for larger pics.

If you are building a Callaway A1 or A2, you can't miss this deal! This set is probably one of a few you'll ever see for sale in your lifetime and probably impossible to find in this condition especially considering its 27 year old vintage.

Having the original and out of production tires from the 80's will certainly help to create the period accurate GTI that'll give you bonus points at shows!

I would like to get $1,500 for this set of wheels picked up from Arlington Hts, IL 60004. Additional shipping charges will be calculated depending on your location. Please contact me at joeytsevr6 at yahoo dot com

    Thanks for looking.

    Nice wheels.

As far as im aware these are bmw e30 RA's if im not mistaken. They have the four extra holes by the wheel bolt recesses like most oem bmw wheels. If you look at the standard vw bbs ra's they dont have those holes and also have vw stamped on them.

But they are nice wheels and look better than standard ra's. Ive got a set that i had the centers powder coated in gloss black, with polished lips and look ace.

    GLWS.

    Thanks for the compliment.

Interesting. I can't confirm or deny the BMW trivia but these are original Callaway wheels because it came with the Callaway GTI from the VW dealer. Maybe someone else with a Callaway GTi can add their input.

    Are 4 bolt bmw wheels 4x100's too?...with a 35mm offset too?

BTW, these are also hub centric for a standard VW hub which means you don't need hub rings. Would BMW's have the same hub size as VW's?

These fit VW's like stock wheels with no aftermarket hardware. Use your OEM lugs and that's it. Can't imagine BMW wheels doing that.

    Thanks for looking.

I see what you mean about the BBS and VW symbols but your wheels are totally different than mine. The recessed bolt area and the basket weave pattern is totally different. Are your's RA's? I think maybe mine aren't RA's but maybe a different edition made for Callaway. All I can say is mine are the genuine Callaway wheels for the Turbo A2 GTi.

I am not familiar with the callaway golf, being from the uk we only had the standard plus a few others.

In regards to the fitment I am very sure that mine are also a straight fit same 4X100 but the bmw e30 bore is 57.0mm rather than the vw 57.1 although they fit just as well. ET wise cant read it on mine as the powder coating has covered it but can see a 5 at the end.

Maybe it was used as an upgrade by this callaway that you speak of, im sure other companies did the same thing.
