so long as the rack has bracketry for the manual gear linkage then you're good to go.

You sure the rack is shot? Or just the inner outer tie rods? Would save you a lot of time
Old sciroccos never die....they just go faster....sometimes.......

Sounds like more of a problem than just a rack.

Check for frame cracks. Talked about a lot on here earlier in the year.

A arm bushings could be gone/bolts broke/loose allowing things to flop around.

Really bad tires/bald/broken belt. Had one of these early on. After new tires car felt new again.

Good luck. Post up what the fix was.

I recently replaced both tie rod assemblies on my car. The driver's side inner was completely shot and there was a lot of play, resulting in the car wandering around in its lane.

Get the front end up in the air and grab a hold of the tire at 9:00 and 3:00 and try to rock it from side to side. You may need to lock the steering wheel before hand so you don't end up turning both wheels. If there is play, odds are that your tie rod needs to be replaced.

On my car it was just the one side but I did them both and the car immediately handled like a go-cart!
