Do you have the euro parts so it bolts in without modification? Id imagine that will have an effect on the height of the shifter when all is said and done.

i have all the parts to swap over to 02j shifter and tower etc
id planned to cut and thread the stick to match the old set up , then it struck me that with the tt part it might be way too short
anyone cut thiers to stock height? any downsides

What's wrong with the stock height? Or is it a question of threading the top of it to match the style of the mk2/3 shifter?
This may sound crazy but despite the fact that the mk4 shifter has an indentation in it, I think you can still thread it.

the mk4 part is longer...i want to back to like a factory car should be
yes i can rethread it , but im asking has anyone else cut thiers and found it too notchy
#6
#7
well yes it will effect it sooner or later ...the longer the stick the more leverage you have
#8
Why don't you just do it? If you don't like it it wouldnt be hard to find another o2j shifttower.
#9
I did mk4 shifter box with 02J transmission, yes the shifter sit higher, I cut about 3 inches and threaded the shift rod to match original shift rod height.![]()

this^
notchy and shift feeling will come from the shifter levers on top of the trans....
#11
Yep, cut and re-thread. You will also have less hand movement, so it will feel a bit like a short shifter.

^ i disagree with that statement...when you cut it down, it almost mirrors the o2a box so it should feel just like the 02a throw....am i missing something on this? the only thing that changed the feel for me was altering the shifter weights/gear selectors on the top of the trans....

I agree with you. When did the swap over 3 years ago. I drove it with 02J stock lever height, then cut it down to O2A height. No change at all. Mine being a G60, I needed cut the weight off the shift tower, that what made it somewhat notchy feel to it, still a lot better than rolling a boat. If I didn't have eurosport inter cooler pipe, it would shift smoother. Next step is get dieselgeek weighted shift linkage to clear the G60 pipes or or go stock weight linkage when finished my 16vt setup.

How dare you
You are correct. I should have clarified that "in comparison to leaving the 02j/M shaft the stock length". I mentioned that since he is running the stock length currently.
Cutting it down should give a similar throw as the 02a as long as your 02a stuff is not beat (like most).

i always thought the 02j had a shorter throw ratio from the factory. my cut 02j definitely feels way shorter than my same height 02a in my VR6...
#17
That I am not sure of.
I do know the shift boxes are pretty much equal in throw. So, when you move the 02m/j shifter "x inches" back it moves the Cable "y inches". Moving the 02a Shifter "x inches" pretty much moves the cable "y inches" as well. I didn't get out the micrometer and only went by a side by side (...just in case someone wants to split hairs)![]()

hmmm, i figured that was the reason people would go through the work of swapping shift boxes in the first place. maybe the discrepancy i feel in throw is a combination of a sloppy 02a, and a solid 02j, but the latter feels like a short shifter in comparison. also noteworthy is my 02j box is connected to an 02j tranny, but i doubt that would make a difference.
so people do this swap just for "feel" and not throw?

that's why I did it, plus diesel geeks short shifter for the O2J is much more solid than any of the options for the O2A.
