Looked sort of like a 4 door Avanti. I'd never seen one before. Maybe this is one of you guys?

The original, or the increasingly distasteful 70s, 80s, & 90s versions? My Dad used to take me to the Studebaker museum in Indiana pretty much evey year and I fell in love with the Avanti at a very young age. Its design may not have aged quite as gracefully as some other classics, but it was still stylish and certainly unique. Plus it offered front disc brakes and an available supercharger which was pretty impressive at the time. I actually got to meet Tom Kellogg (one of the original designers) and get his autograph before his passing.
Hopefully it will continue to be under-appreciated so that I can actually afford to pick one up in the next decade. I <3 Avantis

Two running (although I hear only one runs now, both need complete restorations) Avanti sedans were built. They even see the car shows sometimes.
The first company post Studebaker wanted to improve on the performance and threw in a Corvette engine. That did not last too long. By the 80's through one company or another it turned into a luxurious GM part sourced mid point between a Monte Carlo and an Excalibur, and no sportier then either. By the late 80's the sedan was introduced with full leather, wood, and an optional TV in the back to compliment the Jaguar XJS Sovereign esque little tables that would fold down from the seat backs. I'm not sure how many were actually used to chauffeur interesting and well heeled business people and I've never seen on in person.
I can tell you that their four door Avanti is basically an original design. The standard profile is there yet it had been updated heavily and the production four door Avanti was not at all a copy of the prototypes from decades earlier.
