Would a clogged catalytic converter cause my engine to not go past 4000 rpm? Plus every time I accelerate it's very very sluggish, also there is a very rich smell of gas? Anyone have a clue?

I had an 77 Chevy truck that had a clogged, and was sluggish from just off idle. It litterly went clogged overnight for some reason.

Also it could be your distributer not advancing causing the same issue. A friend of mine got bit on this one. He replaced his cat, but it was still his distributer. A $20 fix vs the $250 he spent.

If it were my truck I would get a timing light out, and bring up the rpm to see if the motor timing advance's.

On an aba which I have too I am not sure. I still need my bently manual.

No rotten eggs. I think I found out what it was. I got a really bad tank of gas from Safeway and it clogged the injectors for cylinders 1-4 taking all my power away. I changed fuel filter and ran the car almost out of gas then put the good stuff in with injector cleaner and it seemed to work. Everyone I talked to said it was the cat or timing but e car is running better with the good gas in it!!!

A "Clogged" cat is not very common. If it were actually clogged, It would be glowing bright red after driving it for a short amount of time. You would have driveability problems. But these problems are a direct result of a poorly running engine.

Even if it did turn out to be clogged, replacing it is only putting a band aide over the fact that your motor needs some help (i.e plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor, O2, ect)

LOL New Haven, Connecticut....not New Jersey

New Haven has that oil refinery smell (which I love) over the Q-bridge.

Never heard of Safeway, but I know theres only like 3 Major gas suppliers and the smaller companies put there little secret ingredients in.

I know some places buy old gas and mix drums of octane booster and voila! this is why I try to stick to Sunoco, Hess, Citgo, Shell, and Mobil. I find I get the best economy on Sunoco.

That reminds me, Ive had a new fuel filter for about 3 years now I havent installed yet

Me too i bought one like 6 months ago and lost it somehow. I was just lazy and didn't want to put it in. So i have to buy a new one. But Safeway is only on the west coast i guess but yea i will never buy regular gas from them when they are refilling their tanks with the trucks. Thats when i bought the gas. So i think stuff got stirred up withing the tank.
