Supercharging The Northstar

Behold Cadillac's first production supercharged engine. Its official SAE-certified horsepower rating of 469 is the highest for any factory Cadillac, including all the jumbo-block SAE-gross-rated behemoths of the 1960s and early 1970s. Making power is all about getting air into cylinders. This can be done the Corvette Z06 way, using great big lungs, or by forcing air in with a blower. Cadillac reckoned the latter approach had a better chance of delivering the refinement and smooth idle demanded of a $77,090 car.
Air enters through an 80mm throttle body, flows around back of the engine and into the valley, where it's sucked up into the largest production Roots blower going. Spinning at 2.1 times crank speed, the air is pressurized to 12 psi before flowing up through a Laminova intercooler (water runs through tubes lined with closely spaced fins). The cooling fins drop pressure to 10 psi and quell the blower pulses. Air then U-turns and flows straight down into the intake valves to meet its octane-fueled destiny. Intake and exhaust valve timing are variable. Spent exhaust gases exit via extrude-honed ports, through cast manifolds and out through oversize catalysts and twin 2.5-inch sewer pipes.
The 469 horses arrive at 6400 rpm, but at least 395 of the 439 peak pound-feet of torque are available between 2200 and 6000 rpm. Fuel economy trails the naturally aspirated STS by three mpg city, six highway. And the idle quality is better, thanks to the added rotational inertia. There's way more to this Northstar than just a bolt-on blower, though.
1. The aluminum block is sand cast instead of die cast, necessitating 2mm smaller bore for better fatigue life.
2. Block and head castings undergo special T7 heat treatment and stabilization for strength.
3. Intake valve seats are copper infiltrated for better heat dissipation and wear.
4. Head gaskets reinforced to withstand 9:1 compression plus 10 psi boost.
5. Bigger oil jets cool the pistons with three gallons of oil per minute.
6. Oil pump, filter are higher capacity.
7. Two mufflers quiet intake roar upstream of supercharger.
8. Starter lives below blower in the valley for improved life (no road splash).

A few comparisons to the Taurus SHO.
The SHO is a very large and luxurious car and with 355 HP and those commercials of it being a tail happy bruiser on the track in spite of being AWD it's a fair comparison.
Sort of, the Lincoln MKS is a bit more modern then the now discontinued STS (still available in China also as a SLS) as it has received a recent update.
However, the Cadillac is much more powerful at 469 HP and it's on a RWD platform then the MKS Ecoboost which is on a FWD/AWD platform.
I work with a guy who drives one. Its definitely huge and definitely heavy and still handles like a big heavy Cadillac but its fast. He has methanol injection on his and it puts out about 600hp at the flywheel. It does have 6 piston front and 4 piston rear calipers. Cool car but its too huge to have a lot of fun with except in a straight line on the highway. WOW GLS:Maverick...our conversation sent you to the internet to throw slanders about a car you have never seen. That is funny...something about big, heavy and only good in a straight line. Hmmm, my car was built and owned by D3 research and design for SEMA and it was tested and débuted by road and track magazine against a GT500. I think I'll stick with my car at 170+ MPH on a road track versus your R...can your VW even break 100MPH? Just asking!
P.S. Please don’t take this personal…as a car guy, I have to defend my vehicle as I stand behind it. It will thrash a track like nobodies business and of course a GTI-R or what ever that golf cart thing is!

My car has 8 piston fronts, 4 piston rears, 15" drilled and slotted rotors, all chrome hubs, 20" 3 piece forgeline race wheels running 295/30/20 in the rear and 255/35/20 in the front without any rub, methanol injection, over drive pulley on the super charger pushing 15 psi boost, one off custom Corsa exhaust, custom chrome intake and filter, Corvette red painted valve covers, custom track proven suspension springs with a 1.5" drop kit, upgraded intercooler, increased capacity reservior with additional cooling fans, custom LED rear bumper facia and many other electronic mods under the hood to control spark timing and water methonal injection all with a custom tune done by D3. You think the car is rare and forgotten...try to find upgrade parts for this car like I have...good luck! Only place is D3 Research and Design out of California. Check out their cars, they are BAD AZZ!

What's up with the attitude, anyways? Your response to your coworker as well as the vehicle description you entered reeks of chest-thumping douchebag. Most of us here like all cars equally, and I don't think his comment about your car was unkind at all.
