Thread: 750AWHP Widebody MKIV R32 For Sale @ 50k. Crazy or Fair asking Price?

  1. 05-30-2012 12:50 AM #1
Every once in a while I browse through the mkiv R classifieds in hopes of finding something id be interested in. Just saw this and thought wowzers, first at the price then at the build itself. But after looking at it again id have to say its a good deal.

Considering how much money has to be tied up in this build I for one think its a fair price. If I had the money lying around Id jump on it. The car only has 8k miles on it.

HPA is selling one of their MKIV R twin turbo cars at 72xxx. Those cars make 5xx hp with a twin turbo kit and the one they are selling has 23xxx miles on it.

For that work and attention to detail, $50k is a fair asking price. To me, it's still just a Golf. But be damned I'd sooner spend $50k on this than a new TT-RS.

My one question: if he has over $200k invested, wouldn't he be more than financially capable to keep it and buy a cheaper SUV for the kid?

if the logic is that because hpa is "asking" $70K for their car, then this car is a value at $50K, there is no logic at all.

i suppose it's possible i am completely ignorant, but are wildly staggered wheels ok for that drivetrain?

beyond the raping of the body, this car reeks of all show, and perhaps a looped owner. which doesn't always work out for the buyer. if he truly has $200K in it, well, i guess it's good he's got passion. sounds like a nursery addition and a new 911 to me, but to each his own.

i wouldn't be surprised, and again, what the F do i know, if that car is NOT faster than its stock counterpart on a proper racetrack. but it sure has lumps.

Seems like a fair price but I do not get building a $200k Golf at all. I'm not hating because there are things I do with my money that people wouldn't understand but dam, a $200k Golf.... not for me.

There are a lot of other cars I'd spend 50 grand on before getting it. If I wanted power I'd probably get a Z06 or supercharge/turbo a base Vette. If I wanted luxury I'd get an A6. I could probably come up with a very long list.

As long as the diameter of the wheels are the same it should be fine. These only have different widths.

Meh, I'd rather buy an Evo for $30k and put $20k into it and still whoop on this thing.

if i was in the market for this kind of thing it would definitely be worth 50k but i would sooner buy a ttrs..... also i have a hard time believing this thing has 200k into and you would be stupid to sell it if you could afford that kind of work to me its more like 100k

Honestly? It looks like a very nicely build car with a lot of attention to detail with a lot of money invested. I have seen people pay more for less. In reality, if someone wants it $50K bad, they will pay it. Personally, if I had FU money and a hard on for a MK4 R32, I would be all over it like stank on isht.

If he could afford to spend that much on the car, then there's no reason he should need to sell it, even if it is for a more practical car. He should just be able to buy another car.

I remember a few months ago a B5 S4 avant that was heavily modified was for sale on ebay. Very similar to this R32. It has a full RS4 conversion and other mods. Owner was asking ~$55k I believe. As far as I know it's still not sold

There is a very limited market to sell something like this. People that are going to spend well above market value for a car often like to personalize the car themselves, not someone else's iteration

I would never buy it because a VW Golf isn't my type of car, with exception to the MK1. I am always curious as to why someone spends so much money and effort to build an awesome machine and then sell it. I know having the same car for a long period of time can get boring, but I would think that kind of car would give you some excitement for quite a long time. The price is high, but it is not outrageous. Given enough time someone will buy it at that price.

Attention to detail my a$$. The flairs on that car are atrocious. Extending sheetmetal in a flat arc from the wheel diameter gives you lovely pointy intersections at the body. POS.

The only thing I disliked about this R32 is the interior... But for $50k you're really getting a steal for how much power this thing is making.

$50k is probably worth the work, but the near stock interior and no nav kills it for me

It's definitely worth the money. It is definitely not a good buy, however. For $50K there are 10 other cars I would have before this. If, on the other hand, one always wanted a ridiculously quick R32 - this is the time and the car to get

What other car has 750awhp for 50k?? Not many if any.
Problem w these builds, they are always personal and reflect the personality of its owner. New buyer won't be getting that satisfaction.
I'm sure he will find somebody willing to pay the price(or close to it). There are people out there who like buying finish show cars, and since its R and regular GTI there is some rarity in those.
I know I know its only a Golf and its not BRZ but....

Maybe he priced it that "low" because its a salvage title. Build thread shows it had a fire in the trunk with less than 1000 miles on it.

This is a great point. I look at this car and read the specs and know that it's very well done. The attention to detail is almost OEM perfect. And at $50k, you're probably getting a deal. But if I legitimately had $50k to spend on a car, I think I'm at the point where I'd rather have something else. Maybe a used c6 z06 or maybe a Boss 302 with a blower. Having gone outside the VW world for my last 2 cars, I realize that there are simply other places I'd rather put my money that I think would be more fun--and wouldn't need nearly the level of modification.

I'm the "6cylVWguy" of 5-6 years ago would be all over this car, but the "6cylVWguy" of today would probably look elsewhere. To me, this is the type of project I'd undertake because I had a stock R32 that I loved and wanted to see just how much I could get out of the platform and motor. I just don't think I could buy it all done up for that much cash though.

Is $50,000 for a Golf crazy? Yes.
Is putting a claimed $200,000 into a Golf crazier? Yes.
