Unless the control scheme absolutely sucks balls, I can't wait. This should tide me over until GTAV. I've always liked the stories that Square Enix comes up and I assume this one will be just as excellent.
Looks like GTA meets Batman, meets Need for Speed, meets etc etc....
The game blends open world elements such as action, street racing and role-playing games elements. The core gameplay of Sleeping Dogs consists of giving the player an open world environment in which to move around freely. Sleeping Dogs is played as an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective action-adventure game with RPG elements. The player controls Wei Shen, a Chinese-American police officer as he goes undercover to infiltrate the Triad organization called Sun On Yee (A reference to real-life triad gang Sun Yee On). On foot, the player character has the additional ability to walk, run, jump, climb over obstacles and swim, as well as use weapons and Wei Shen's martial arts skills in combat. Players are also capable of driving a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, boats and motorcycles.
The combat system heavily revolves around hand-to-hand fighting with strong influences from Batman: Arkham Asylum/City's "Freeflow" combat system. The driving segments have been inspired by the Need for Speed series, with several developers having worked on previous Need for Speed titles. If the player is riding a motorcycle, Wei has the ability to jump onto a moving vehicle.
Although storyline missions are necessary to progress through the game and unlock certain content and parts of the city, they are not required, as players can complete them at their own leisure. When not attempting a storyline mission, players can free-roam, giving them the ability to participate in activities such as stealing cars, join a fight club, karaoke, gambling dens and bet on Cockfights. Their are also several potential girlfriends for Wei Shen to date in the game. Side missions such as participating in street races can keep the player occupied for hours, and successful completion of such activities offer great rewards to the player. There are also stores within the game that Wei Shen can purchase new clothing from, which give him various bonuses. As suits will increase Face XP, gang attire adds Triad XP, and police uniforms increase Police XP.
Sleeping Dogs features role-playing elements with three different XP stats (Triad XP, Face XP, and Police XP), which emphasized the personalization of the main protagonist. Clothing, accessories and vehicles are available for purchase by Wei, and have more of an effect on non-player characters' reactions. Sleeping Dogs tracks acquired skills in areas such as hand-to-hand combat, which improve through use in the game.
Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

Looks a'ight, but I could never get into the Grand Theft Auto series. If this is basically just more of the same with more/better fighting mechanics, I'm not interested. I can only roam around a beautiful landscape for so long before all the gopher/taxi missions start getting old.

What's the verdict on this game?
The Game Informer review was generally positive (as most are) , but said the game was really buggy.

Although it's not indicative of game quality, it's already on sale for a discounted price this week in Canada. This close to launch that's generally not good news. I see that there's already nearly half a dozen DLC's for it already too which is ridiculous for a game so new.

Jump on Redbox's site and see if a copy is available in your area for rent. I was tempted to buy it outright, because it looked very promising. I rented it and got fairly bored after about 45 minutes or so, but then again, I had quite a lot going on then. I might be a little biased though, it seems like the only games I really play now-a-days are shooters.

I had it on pre-order. Cancelled it and bought Darksiders 2 instead. I haven't been impressed with Darksiders, but I haven't read any glowing reviews of Sleeping Dogs either.

Downloading the PSN demo.
4.5 out of 5 star use rating is very good... maybe all the Asian kids are just happy a Grand Theft Auto type game is out with an Asian lead?![]()

Side missions are probably my favorite thing about Yakuza...
I heard Sleeping Dogs was good. just my thoughts.

The Sleeping Dogs PSN demo is short... and includes ZERO driving/vehicles...
But it does show the parkour, hand to hand and gun play.
It has a decent cover system, and guns are easy to use.
Hand to hand is button mashing and just hitting the right button when somebody attacks (conveniently highlighted in red just before they attack) to block and counter.
The controls were actually quite good... but not being able to test the driving really bugs me.
Why not show it in the demo?

I like it and consider it a breath of fresh air from the GTA franchise. Granted it's still follow the open world-sandbox formula, there's a bit more detail I think in certain scenarios. The driving/racing system feels like NFS and the melee system is probably the best I've used, akin to the Batman Arkham games. Plot is surprisingly awesome and has a lot of depth; voice acting is decent too. Some of the more violent scenes are just crazy gory lol. The subtitles for the Cantonese is a bit of an adjustment for a video game though but you get used to it quickly.
Worth checking out and playing if you're into the genre IMO. Wouldn't pay $60 for it though, maybe $40 at best or borrow from a friend.

Finished the main story last night. Crazy game and there's still a lot left to do. I found it much more engaging than the GTA franchise, which is probably why I never finished any of those.
Picked up Bulletstorm for $10 on my lunch. Should hold me over until BLOPS2 comes out.

Good game. A lot of fun. The story didn't throw a lot of surprises my way. Wish I would have complete a little more before finishing the story.

Awesome game!
It ends kind of quickly though.
I wish it had a longer, harder story.
