Thread: Reliability

  1. 05-30-2012 08:39 PM #1
Hi! I've got my eye on a 2010 Golf 2.5L. Currently, I am driving 06 Beetle and it's been driving me nuts with all the electrical problems! So I am just wondering if the Golf have similar issues? Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

As far as a Volkswagen goes... The mk6 is a pretty safe bet.

But it's sort of on a different level than toyotas.

For a German car, the mk6 is a safe bet.

    I wouldn't have a problem buying a mk6 used.

Where was the Beetle assembled? Mexico? If you get a GTI, those are from germany. Much better.

It's kinda a fact duder. The cars built in Germany have far exceeded the quality to those built in Mexico and the US. VW closed down a plant here because the cars were absolute trash.

In CR's statistics, Golf's reliability improved a lot in recent years.
In JD Power's statistics, Golf's reliability is still poor.

VW's JD Power service satisfaction rating is higher than that of Toyota's.

My personal experience with 2011 Golf: I visited dealer many times, used VW supported rental cars for tremendously many days - I became famous in my apartment building -, I had to "fight" against some dealers, . . . overall it was like series of nightmares.

With 2012 Golf: Not as many problems as in the 2011 Golf. I am now facing weird attitude of VW of America with a kind of water leak.

When a dealer says what sounds like nonsense - the leak is by VW design -, VW of America should help resolve the matter in a reasonable manner. That happened with the same kind of water leak on my 2011 Golf, but VW of America behaves differently with 2012 Golf. VW of America just repeats that VW of America supports that dealer's "nonsense" even after admitting that there is no VW documents supporting that dealer's "nonsense".

Just keep in mind that the people with problems are always going to talk "louder" than those without.

So don't be worried by one or two peoples bad experience. I think we can all agree that for the most part, the mk6 platform is great (with the exception of strange water leak ^^ I'm gonna check mine later)

    1. The Golf is assembled in Germany.

    2. Mexico uses the same parts, same robots, and same QA. Quality/reliability has been the same as for cars coming from Germany for almost a couple of decades, now.

As to the 2.5 Golf, Consumer Reports rates it's reliability better than that of the average Toyota or Honda.

Toyota and especially Honda aren't what they used to be in terms of reliability -- even though Toyota literally wrote the book on manufacturing quality.

If you want the absolute best reliability, go with a new focus, or a Hyundai. The mk6 vw platform is up there with Honda/Toyota, And has been completely trouble free for me besides some minor things (had to replace a seat cover under warranty, dribbling rear windshield nozzle which I fixed myself, rattles here and there)

if I bought a Hyundai though, I would kill myself. Just every day I'd wake up & kill myself.

    LOL agreed.

My last car was MKV with the 2.5L and I had no engine issues in the 20k through 150k I owned it.

In the 1980's in the US... And they took over a decrepit former Chrysler factory, which was poorly equipped.

There is no data that shows German made VW's are more reliable than Mexican made VW's.

no... but I can tell you that the actual quality of the cars that come from germany are higher than those from mexico.
Feel the jetta... then feel a gti. Heck... feel a GLI to a GTI. The GTI quality is better. Just in terms of "solid"ness.
So I would imagine that would somehow transfer over to reliability.

So how come my brand new GTI has so much wind noise? The Deutchland A team was on vacation when they built my car?

There is a difference between built quality and actual cost cutting in the material/part used. A car can be build with good quality but with cheap parts. Just like a car with expensive bits can still be build shoddily....they are not mutually exclusive...

    edit:
A good globetrotting multi-national company should be good enough to have the same standard wherever they setup the plant. Ultimately its the plant execution that determines how well the product is made. I had a Mexican made Camry and it was perfectly well put together and is bullet-proof reliable. And we had a Japan made Infiniti that had a rusting from inside door without any mark on the outside...

The Jetta has a lower material quality. Of course it is going to feel cheaper. The argument proposed was German cars are built better, which simply is not true.
