Thread: Time to change spark plugs in 2009 Passat!

  1. 05-31-2012 12:59 AM #1
    Hello everyone!

I have an 09 Passat with the TSI engine, and I currently have 70k on the odometer.

I wanna change the spark plugs on my own, so I need to know what tools and plugs I will need to consider before changing them on my own.

I figure that this is an easy task for someone who is pretty handy and doesn't wanna pay the dealer 200 dollars.

What tools and plugs will I need to do all this? Also, Will I need to gap the plugs on my own, or do I not need to worry about that? Thanks!

If it's stock or stock-ish just replace them with OEM plugs off of ECS or buy them at the dealer. You will need a spark plug socket (the typical size, can't remember it off hand), a 4-6 inch extension and wratchet. Most say them come pre-gapped, but I would get a gap tool just to make sure they are correct. A gap tool is only a few dollars and they should be gapped around .030 I believe.

Thanks, man! And should I worry about how tight they're tightened, or should I be fine with tightening the plugs by hand?

By hand is fine. They have a crush washer on them, so you will feel them tighten up and then compress the washer and it will firmly stop.
