if it is an OBDII car, go to Autozone.

if it is an OBDI, go to autozone.

If an OBDII scanner won't read it, then you need VCDS:

      Autozone does not scan anymore.

      Try blink codes....

scroll to the bottom, option 2

OR, just change your O2 sensors if the CEL is not blinking lol.

      from left to right

or, if you're japanese, from right to left.

remind me to never buy an OBD1.

Autozone always scanned my 95 before I bought my own scanner. As long as it has an OBD2 diagnostic port, they can scan it. A lot of early Mk3s have an OBD2 diagnostic port.

For OBDI jump these pins for 4 seconds. Check engine light will blink 1, 2, 3, or 4 times. 4 times.
So you will gets codes like 1122, 1234, 2113, 2114. blah blah blah blah. The report back or google your codes.

and im guessing it will only beep 4 times right? like for example:

      beep beep beep
      beep beep
      beep
      beep beep beep beep

this would mean the code would be 3214 (not saying thats accurate, just for example)

Find someone with VCDS and scan it properly.

If it's a 95 and your following directions exactly from Bently, it's possible there's some cutoff in 95 where they don't blink anything. I know on my 95 I never had success with getting it to blink and it would just clear CEL like you state. Autozone should be able to scan for free and even a cheap scanner from Harbor Freight should work. You could also use limited version of VCDS Lite and a cheap eBay interface to get the codes.

I think they switched from OBD I to OBD II in the middle of 1995. And the jumper method does not work on OBD II. The OBD II MK3's have the luxury of using a code scanner which should have a read out that tells you exactly what the error is.
