    Not car related but okay...

Bars, visit Times Square but don't spend too much time there, don't get hustled by those street rappers, The Village is fun, museums, Washington Square/Union Square/Madison Square/Bryant Park/Central Park are all nice places to just chill.

If you're looking to do some less-touristy stuff then hitting up the parks and squares is a good idea. I work a couple blocks away from Bryant Park and that's always a nice place to hang out and take in good weather and the foot traffic scenery that comes with good weather! It never hurts to just explore Manhattan a little bit, get lost, find some new things. Don't be too afraid of going off the beaten path.

There are a couple of threads about this in Off Topic that have a lot of great suggestions. Start there.

Pretty much this, but if you're looking for an adventure, get a 7 day unlimited pass and go EVERYWHERE. Take a subway just for the hell of it. Go off the beaten path, see the City as native New Yorkers see it, not as tourists see it. Go to hole-in-the-wall restaurants, walk through Chinatown and Little Italy, stuff like that. Go to Wall Street and the Financial District at night... might be personal preference, some might find it boring, but that place is crawling with people during the day. It's cool to see it "empty" in it's "natural status".

You'll get looked at funny if you call it pop around these parts.

Want a car suggestion? Right by the entrance to the Holland Tunnel there is an amazing shop. I never went inside but there are always amazing cars both vintage and new hanging around there.

Don't listen to this man. There is nothing to see south of 34th street. Just stay in midtown, avoid places that natives go at all cost. Nothing to see, nothing to do where natives live or hang out.

metro north new haven line (red) from grand central station or Harlem 125th St. station to greenwich - costs you about 6-8$ for a ticket one way off peak.

    How long are you staying?

Do you know the city at all? There are so many different neighborhoods to see and do. It's really a matter of what it is that you want to do. How 'touristy' do you want your stay?

Want to see museums? Plenty of those of all varieties. Plenty of small art galleries too.

Want to sight see? Take the double decker bus, hop on and off as you please, and take the Staten Island Ferry to go past the Statue of Liberty. Top of the Rock is great at night (midtown). I found it very expensive, but I'm local. If I were a tourist, I'd pay the $25 or so it costs per person.

    See Ground Zero. It's powerful.

Seeing construction of the new One World Trade tower is impressive too.

For people coming for the first time, I tell them to just walk around. It's a city that you need to experience, and no better way to do it than walking around, looking up at the building, architecture, grab a hot dog or pretzel on the street, etc. Take the subway for the heck of it.

Day 1, starting in midtown, walk up 5th Ave along the park, go through Central Park, come down 8th or 9th, go through Times Square and do all the 42nd street / midtown stuff like Broadway, Macys, etc.

Day 2, do the same but head south. See Greenwich Village, SOHO, Little Italy, Chinatown, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and back.

Most importantly, have fun! It's a great place.

Day 1, starting in midtown, walk east to and walk south down 5th Ave along the park, go through Central Park, come west and walk north up 8th or 9th, go through Times Square and do all the 42nd street / midtown stuff like Broadway, Macys, etc.

Day 2, do the same but head south. See Greenwich Village, SOHO, Little Italy, Chinatown, walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and back.

    FTFY.

Avenues run north south, streets run east west. So if you're going from the east side to 8th ave you're heading west not "up" or "down". No sense in confusing someone who's going to get shoved on the side walk by NYer's already.

definitely check out ground zero then walk down fulton street to south street seaport, lots of cool stuff there. Heartland brewery has maybe the best fish and chips around and good brew. Night time go to the meat packing district. You will see a bunch of 60+ year old men driving super cars with 21 year old model girlfriends in the passenger seat (be prepared to pay $10 for a bud light)

Sure there's the statue of Liberty, Times Square, Empire State Building, Wall St. While you're in Time Square, get yourself an authentic NY meal at Bubba Gump Shrimp, or a slice of NY pizza at Sbarros.

All of this is pretty poor advice.

Heartland Brewery is a chain like TGIF, you're better off finding a proper pub to have fish and chips there are tons of them. There are plenty of bars that sell local brew beer and fish and chips, I'd try for one of those. Yelp.com is your friend.

I wouldn't go to meatpacking for the night life if you paid me. It's filled with a lot of bros, bankers, Jersey Shore Trash, Orange duck-faced girls, and probably everything else associated with the lowest common denominator. The bars suck, the drinks are over priced, and if you're not rolling with 2 girls per 1 guy, don't plan on getting into any club. Oh and the cover will probably be $20-$40.

There are a ton of great night life spots in the city, Meatpacking is not one of them. Unless you really really like the smell of cologne, self tanner, and vomit.

Also, don't drink Bud Lite, there are a lot of great local breweries in Brooklyn.

Of course I'm not being serious. I was poking fun at the ridiculous question in this thread. You found the Sbarro's line the first offensive one?
