I'm sure that a lot of the news stories that get posted on here are just the tip of the nut job ice berg.

Bath salt face eaters. Gutless kooks. Porn star boner mailer. The list goes on and on.

Have you given up on society? Has Darwin been working overtime?

Those of you with children, does it frighten you to see your kids grow up with all the bull**** that goes on?

no rant, just curious to hear opinions.

I don't have kids but it does make me almost not want to bring a kid into this world. What I keep telling myself is that this is not the standard. There are billions of people in this world and we only really hear about the very worst.

There has been horrible stuff happening in the world for thousands of years. It's just that in today's 24/7 news cycle world, we hear about all of the bad stuff (and little of the good things) happening.

The thing that does worry me, with a kid on the way, is the global economic problems we are facing. We are inundated with the negative news.

Yep. Makes me fear for the future of my girls, honestly. My ex-wife was pregnant with our first girl (about 2 months pregnant) when 9/11 happened. That really shook me up thinking "What am I bringing this kid into?" Unfortunately, things only seem to be getting worse.

Yup, I fear for the future of my kids but I hope to raise them to make the world a better place.

Crazy stuff like this has been going on for a long time...

Now that everyone has a digital camera and the internet there's no way not to find out about it.

^^This. I grew up w/newspapers (who were in business to sell ad space for car dealers) and three networks (who also fed news to radio stations) from AP, UPI, and Reuters. That was pretty much it for, well, ever, so you never heard of small scale problems more than about one state away.
Trust me, "things" have never been better. And will improve.

It bothers me that people really seem to eat this stuff up. I don't like that people have become so desensitized that watching Human Centipede is now status quo. I think in many ways things are getting worse and it's a downward spiral of vacuousness, stupidity and apathy and really I don't know what the solution is. Eventually the number of people who don't care about anyone other than themselves will outweigh the number of people who give a crap and then...what? Nothing good. Yes, horrible things have happened since we climbed down out of the trees. Even before that.

But throw in the towel? You should never be without a towel.

We live on an age of immediate information exchange. For every negative sensational story there is a "boring" positive story that goes unheard.

Relax. Worry about what you can control, and that means do your best to raise your kids the right way. (I've got 4 and global economic problems are the least of my worries)

My 4 grandparents were all born in Germany between 1899-1902. They lost "everything" in WW1. They moved to the US. They lost "everything" again in the great depression (makes our current crisis look like a keg party). Their/my German relatives lost "everything" again in WW2. Guess what - everything got better.

Compared to past generations...we here in the US have it great! A glass full attitude helps...

While I won't say they aren't.... I will say that because of technology, we certainly SEE more of the worse.

i live far enough from Florida to worry. Living in South Dakota has its advantages, besides a rash convenience store and casino robberies, the news consists of politics, health care, occasional meth labs and weather.

my quality of life will not be compromised.

the thing with news is that certain topics trend and then the reporters and news outlets all skew their research to find more info on those trending topics... hence LOTS of news stories about odd ball things that make those incidents seem like part of a bigger issue.

for example... maybe 8 yrs ago or so, everything on tv for a while was about kidnapping. so much so that you would think 50% of kids were getting kidnapped. did a little digging. turns out that the number of kidnappings was actually DOWN, its just that the news reporting had increased exponentially.

i gave up on society a long time ago really. people in packs are friggen stupid. crazy people everywhere.

personally i think that darwin took a vacation. all these crazy and idiot people seem to be taking out others, instead of darwin doing his job and making sure that they only take themselves out.

kid on the way. pretty much not sure that bringing a kid into the world is a kindness to the kid. the world is wrecked. no one has any self-respect. no one has respect for others. people do not fear consequences of their actions.

we really need to revert to a less 'PC' of dealing with things. eye for an eye. you kill someone? we kill you. no if's, and's or but's about it. no waiting on death row with 45 appeals. you get convicted today, you get a bullet tomorrow. you get caught raping? we rape you, until you die. you get caught stealing? we take everything single thing you have away from you. children, houses, cars, money, savings, freedom.

Don't watch cable news channels and you'll be much less worried. BBC News and NPR for me, along with Al Jazeera when something's going on overseas (they have an excellent stream).

Do people really get this sucked in and upset by watching the news? I truly don't get it. The news is there to scare the crap out of you so you keep watching. Of course they're not going to report that people are working, falling in love and living long, productive lives. What would that do for ratings?

In a world of bigger, better, faster, stronger, people will always want more when they know its coming around the corner. Why? Greed, people cannot leave “good enough” alone. Like some say “If it aint broke, don’t fix it!”
The smart will make it, and the stupid will abuse it, break it, then want more.
I see a split in intelligence: It easier to let the ball roll down with gravity than to roll it uphill to see what’s beyond. Since when was it so damn hard Intelligence and stupidity are both growing in amplitude, no room for the mediocre guy.
Kids/youth are going downhill. Look at who they idolize: rappers/musicians/entertainers. They see it as an easy way to make money. Thanks to innovation and technology, musicians are spreading their image around the world in seconds. Kids are idolizing these people who have material things and want it. They aren't creative or imaginative enough to keep it exciting, so they break it than want bigger, better. Why are kids no longer creative? IPods, IPhones, Smartphones. We're giving kids these toys too early in life. Parents lost initiative to stop their kids from crying/screaming, so we shove a big bright screen in their face from an early age. They are de-sensitized, and lack social skills they would rather rot their brain on YouTube than go outside and play. I have a stepson who was raised decently, but if I have my own son, I’m going to make sure he doesn’t end up like the little monsters of today. Adults do this too, we are so damn connected to cellphones/mp3’s that we are losing basic social skills. You’re walking down the street or on the bus/train, BAM on goes the headphones escaping from the world. Because I was on a no music day yesterday, I made a friend who speaks fluent Dutch, is willing to help me with mine, and learned about a few good restaurants around here. I love my music, but some days I keep the headphones off to observe people and talk with them.
So all of you fat/lazy people & tools of society: hug a nerd, they make everything easier for you.

Oh my God. This is the worst post ever.

You do realize every generation says this exact same thing about its succeeding generation, right?

I think your rant misses. I agree it's somewhat the parents fault in the way you raise your kid, however it's not ipods, youtube, or phones that ruin anyone and it's not the "smart kids" that fix it or make it better. What's needed is a strong moral foundation instilled at a early age. A clear understanding of right from wrong. Being decent & productive vs being selfish & lazy.
As stated, the things occurring in the news are nothing new. Desperation can do a lot to a person especially if the person is mentally sick/deranged.
