I realize that Gateway has managed to make me look like an idiot in this thread. Therefore, I will keep my original post on here, but understand that I posted it prior to having full information on the situation (which still is not reasonably available).

    Original Post >>>>>>>

For you guys who mocked, etc., the DEALERSHIP, not VW, is giving him a new 2013 Golf R (his current one is a 2012. He will have to eat the lease payments he's already made on the 2012 (which is fine, since he's had use of the car), but he gets a brand new 2013 in a few months.

Just goes to show: it never hurts to advocate on your own behalf (as I have been saying all along). He acted professionally, told the truth, and he got the benefit of so doing.

How is this some kind of victory again?

    - Owner gets mad the dealership scuffed "his" car. ("His" used lightly, since it was a lease.)
    - Dealership leases owner a new R, and gets a gently used R to resell for even more profit.

    That'll teach them!

Yeah, sounds like the dealership won this round.
Not that it really mattered to the dude, he did not care about the car enough to even inspect it before signing the lease.

Maybe he will learn this time.

This isn't the same Gateway who used to own a 337 and a GTO, is it?

Owned outright or not, he still owns it for the period in question.

Would YOU want a scratch on a brand new car?

They've done studies you know. 60% of the time... it works every time.

Win-Win right there. Customer thinks he is getting a deal. Dealer is getting a deal. Dealer has it MUCH better though.

    Exactly.

They are only doing this because it costs them less money.

your ownership claim is no more or less with a lease compared to traditional financing.

the only question you need to ask re: actually owning the car is if the title is in your possession or not.

no, but i sure as h*** wouldn't cry about it like this. it's a scratch on a bumper. oh god...i think the car won't drive now.

if you guys buy cars to keep them pristine, then why in GODS name are you buying 30,000$ (if that) VW's?

I'm confused as to how this is a win? He's out $3500, doesn't get a TTRS, adds another six months of payments, dealership gets compensated and will still sell the used car at nearly MSRP. Seems like the only person who lost was Gateway. Let the mocking continue.

Exactly. The dealership gets a check from VWoA and turns around and makes money selling a CPO R. They then get to sell another car making money off of that. The Gateway gets another car to continue to make payments on. There is no 'give' at all in this situation. OP is a bit overenthusiastic here.

The dealer realized that once they sell his 6 month old R they may actually come out ahead vs. paying to repair it. win - win

    yup.

he still made payments against the 2012.
he will be paying for the 2013.

how did he win anything again?

he didnt 'win' ANYTHING beyond getting let out of his current lease early without a penalty. people actually get this 'win' ALL THE TIME when they go to their dealer to lease another car.

Because people are broken in the head ... truly, I have no idea how stupid some people have to be to pay that ... Even if it was $0 due at signing, a 36-month lease still means you're plopping down $20,500+ over 3 years for a $33,000 car ...

    1) You are not considering taxes.

    2) It is a ~$38,000 car in most circumstances (most of the Golf R's out there are loaded up).

    My wife's 2011 128i was $39,700. We pay $541/month over 36 months with a $2500 down payment.

Unless you are getting a special lease deal, this is generally what it costs to lease a new car like this.
