Thread: Wheel Swap

  1. 06-01-2012 08:06 PM #1
Hey guys, my car is making a humming noise while driving, so far I tried many different things to isolate the problem with no success. I need someone with a good set of wheels and tires to put them in my car, and know for sure if tires are making that noise; I don't wanna get new wheels and tires if I don't have to. I'm located in North Jersey willing to drive a reasonable distance, any help will be greatly appreciated.

get your wheel bearing checked out. On an open road, swerve your car from left to right, at 15-25 miles per hour. You can check for which side and corner a wheel bearing is bad. When you swerve that car, it puts load on the bearing, and causes the humming sound to get louder, and when you go the other direction, it has a less humming sound. .

Thanks for your suggestion, both bearing in the front were replaced 2 months ago, in addition to that, tires were rotated and balanced including an alignment. According to the dealer there is nothing wrong with the suspension and axle, they think is the tires; by the way my car is 2006 jetta.
    Thanks

If you can get the car high enough and spin the wheels manually fast enough, take a long screw driver, and place it on a non rotating surface behind the wheel, and listen for humming through the screw driver handle, have a friend turn the wheels. It just to rule out all possibilities.
I had to replace a customers wheel bearings one time at the dealer, when I worked for VW, as good as the installation looked, believe it or not, when I took the car for a road test, the bearings were humming again, thats because I was careless on how I pressed in the new ones to the hub. Good Luck, hope you find the problem.
