So I rearended someone a couple Weeks ago and my insurance totaled my car and is telling me my car is only worth 1,600. Well there totaly off on there number. What I need is if anyone has a 1989-1991 jetta gli with miles around 235000 or more miles that you feel is worth 3500-6000 or more to post a add on craigslist forsale so I can show my insurance some comparable cars. I feel my car with 235k and a whole buncha mods recarro mint trophy's blablabla was worth at least 4,000 at least. It would be soooooo much help to me if you could do this. If you do feel like helping please send me a link to your add rusder77@hotmail.com please include pics. If its alpine white that would help even more but any color will do

I had a similar issue a few years back. I just stuck to my guns and kept arguing with my insurance until we agreed on a number. And you probably already know this, but don't let them take the car, let them keep it's scrap value. Hope everything works out ok.

Unless you added your mods to your insurance they're only insuring a stock Jetta. Just keep arguing with them. Should be more than 1600.

this happened to me when i got t-boned by a drunk driver in my 88 gli, told me it was only worth 1200 when i had receipts within the past 6 months for $5000 in upgrades. after arguing with them for 2 months it came down to i get 1200 and i take off all my upgrades. when they came to get the car 2 weeks later i had pulled the entire interior, the engine/tranny, the entire wiring harness, all the lights, all good window glass, trunk lid and all suspension components. they never said anything about the completely stripped shell when they came and got it. sold the parts for close to 6000, plus the 1200 they gave me made it the most expensive mk2 ive owned
my car breaks the plane in the front leaning rest, does yours?

I have had 5 VW's totaled in the last 10 years or so, 3 were MkII GLI's. Every time but once I did not get enough money to replace the car. I was able to retain all the cars for between 0 and $300, the only good part of the deal. The rules are different depending on who is at fault (Speaking for WA, not sure of OR). Your fault and your insurance, they arrive at a value using a sampling of cars that are supposed to be like yours. These are what they sold for, not what you might find for sale. The problem with this is that these cars they are using as comparison most likely are not up to par. Many GLI's were stolen, stripped, and pieced together with non-GLI parts, missing the Recaros, BBS wheels, etc. The sales records do not take this into account. Another problem is they go by what the buyers reported they bought the car for when the title is transferred. Any cheating to avoid sales tax will lower the "true market value" of the cars. They also lumped in non-GLIs, stating that they were an option and not a separate model. For example they might find a GL with 235K that sold for $800 and decide it would be worth $1100 if it was a GLI. With 235K, $1600 might be a real world number I am sad to say.

The plan of having people post cars will not help much and could even get you in an insurance fraud situation. If you can find cars that have sold and can verify what was paid for them that would be helpful.

If you have had recent work done you might be able to get the value bumped up. One of my cars had 10 days on a tranny rebuild and replacement and that money was kicked in. If you are unhappy with the amount let them know and keep them on the phone (if you start swearing they can hang up) and make them explain the offer while letting them know why you are unhappy. Take good notes. Hope things work out for you.

If you just go to your photobucket album and put the cursor over the pick you want to post it should show a drop down menu. Click on the the one for IMG code and paste it in your post like so.
