Both of your images are looking a bit under exposed. Color neg (especially when it is expired) works well when over exposed. The extra density in the film helps give a good black and the scanners can still retain a lot of the highlight detail. For this reason, we shoot a fair amount of color neg film when shoot outdoor weddings as the latitude of the film being scanned is super high. We also tend to shoot our neg film +1 stop most of the time.

One thing I will say any of you are new to shooting film, see if you can get a wet print contact sheet for a few rolls. There is no better way to see what your film is doing than a contact sheet as you'll see all of your frames at once and know if your film is properly exposed. Scans are nice, but the lab is correcting them for you, so I believe it is harder to learn what your film is doing as someone is already adjusting the images.

I worked in a photo lab, and kinda still do. The scanners in the lab only have two buttons for adjusting, plus or minus. And we're paid to get stuff out of the door as quickly as possible, not to think. I don't get contact sheets but I use the prints to see which ones came out good/useable. Then I scan them myself and make them how I want it.

    Azul thanks for the notes.

I definitely kept it in mind this past weekend when I shot through my first roll of Portra 160.

Still, you have an automated scanning software interpreting the film and then an operator is still making adjustments to one's images. Whether or not the lab you work at does minimal adjustments to an image, they are still being made. I wouldn't recommend always getting contact sheets for every order as that wouldn't be cost effective. But, if you are just starting out and want to see how your exposures are measuring up across an entire roll of film, nothing will show you better than a proper contact sheet. What is the point of shooting an analog medium if you don't bother to learn how that medium looks in an analog form? Scans of film can look different than prints of film under an enlarger.

I have always rated my Portra 160 at 100. Don't forget that the ISO listed on the box of film (any film) is really just a recommended starting point. What you should rate your film is really based on your camera, lab, and image preference.

shooting with a rangefinder has a learning curve.

shooting using only Fred Parker's Ultimate Exposure calculator has a learning curve.

Learning both at the same time results in a whole roll of...bleh.

    Summarit can be sharp

Then it can get...weird hazy...(especially when you're within 1 meter...)

im going to gamble on some old slide film. its tough cause +1 EV per decade is the rule but slides are picky with exposure.

Good peeps . Not the chattiest of staff but they are very knowledgeable and keep a good amount of film in stock. I'll actually (hopefully) be there at some point later this afternoon.

^It looks like you're ready for Wednesday

I gave "camping" a shot last weekend and had a, ugh, good time.. Well, good enough to make me retreat back to my very-urban Sunday Night drum circle as soon as I got back into the city.

DC is cool because you can go from this:

    Week4_2 by delgiudice, on Flickr

    to this:

    Week4_4 by delgiudice, on Flickr

within the span of a little less than two hours.

This little girl is a regular, and will probably run the show in about a decade

    Week4_5 by delgiudice, on Flickr

All shot on Portra 160 with my Olympus OM1 50mm f/1.8

I've been shooting this whole time I promise! I have 3 weeks of images to post. I'll throw the first one up tomorrow. The others may take a while, I need to get a Medium format scanner before I get further behind than I already am (about 40 rolls of 120 deep).

Gah this thread makes me want to shoot more film so bad. I need to find a Yashica SLR to use all my newly acquired ML lenses (which are fantastic). The ML 50mm 1.4 is almost as good as the Planar 50 1.4 I had.

I'll probably load up the Spotmatic or SRT101 with some BW400CN I've been saving for the 4th .

Ran a test roll through the Electro 35 I recently acquired. The shutter is sticking a bit, so I'll never get the full aperture opening and shutter speeds may be a little slow, but it works overall until I can clean it. My scanner isn't handling negatives very well, so I scanned the prints from CVS.

I scored a Canon Elan 7e from work for free, and slapped on the 40mm STM lens on it. Awesome lens.

Also began to take pictures of places I like to eat.

I've been (mostly) keeping up with the weekly schedule but haven't gotten much processed. My 'B&W Process-at-home' kit is 90% complete so I'll be taking a hack at processing the past couple weeks worth of rolls myself this weekend. I usually botch experiments like that in an epic manner so stay tuned for some laughter filled updates

I did shoot a roll of Velvia 50 a couple weeks ago that should be ready in a few days so I'll make sure to post a few of those as well.

Here are a couple from a roll of Portra 160 I wandered around with at a wedding and throughout DC this afternoon. The B&W was converted in Aperture 3.
