Thread: "Stealth" Rear Turn Signal Bulbs... Purchased or Painted?

For those that have killed their rear egg yokes, how'd you do it?

Did you purchase "stealth" chromed signal bulbs somewhere? And if so where?

    or

Did you just paint your stock bulbs yourself? And if so what paint did you use?

From what I can tell the rear signal bulb in the CC is a bit of an odd duck making it much more difficult to find chromed bulbs, and really this is a simple mod everyone should do to clear up the looks of their rear taillights IMHO.

I would like to know as well... I want to get rid of the amber. When I used to have my Porsche there was a place I went online to get all my chromed bulbs but I can't find the website to save my life. Maybe I'll check my old e-mail. They had VW and Porsche stuff though, and basically any bulb you wanted to change.

You know the size of the bulb?

Also what about the DRL bulbs? I was planning to install the LED turn signals from achtuning and route them to my existing DRLs, but I'd also like to put in a nicer more white / hid or LED bulb in the exisiting DRLs to match the HIDs. (2010 VR6 4motion btw).

Search ebay for BAU15S and CHROMED and you will find several US-based vendors, so you don't have to wait for shipment from UK.

You can find lots of BAU15S chrome bulbs, but I think they are all the wrong bulb size/shape.

Does BAU15S only define the base of the bulb? That's probably a stupid question.

I pained some clear ones. Used VHT red tint spray and I believe #97 bulbs. Shaved one of the poles off then painted it dark red with the VHT tint. Had them on for about 3K without any issues. Cost was around $14 but if you have some buddies that want some do a bunch, you don't need the whole can to do a set of bulbs.

Could do a how to if you guys want.

Hmmm... anyone know if there's a Chrome light that shines RED instead of amber? So the turn signal would be red instead of yellow, and show white otherwise?

Interesting idea. I was just thinking today how I thought most rear turn signals were red because some just flash the brake light. That would give a nice monochrome look, but maybe since the brake lights stay on it wouldn't stand out enough. I'd love to see what it would look like though. Problem is its hard enough finding a plain amber let alone chromed amber let alone chromed red replacement bulb

I wonder if the rear turn signals in the '13 are red or amber?

I took my oem orange ones and lightly sprayed them with chrome spray paint i had hanging around. Gets the job done, but then again i feel the light doesn't blink as bright, especially when compared to the front blinking lights. Does anyone know of any Orange led ones that work without throwing a code?

I tried but it turned out like crap. Bought some chrome paint and sprayed the stock bulbs I was in a hurry and didn't let them dry properly. From far away they look okay but up close it just looks bad. Plus light output is definitely diminished.

I bought some from a us seller. The base was the right size but the bulb was way to big to fit in the hole

Same here. The BAU15s only describes the base. Here in the US, the 7507 bulb uses that base but the bulb is too big. You would think VW would design it to work with a more readily available size.

Why chrome? Just buy a can of silver paint, do one coat (which you will still see amber, do not glob it on there, very light coat..) let dry, do a second. Mine are done this way on the CC and previous vehicles, you would never be able to tell the difference, even if you were right up on the lights.. Light out put is probably slightly diminished, but I can CLEARLY see it on a sunny day in the middle of the afternoon, which is good in my book..

Any as a tip, tape around the base of the bulb covering the metal, and then tape the bulb standing up on a piece of carboard, makes it very easy to spray them..

I only got chrome because that's what all the aftermarket ones are. Turned out silver looking anyway. I think if I would've taken my time and sprayed them properly like you described, I would have had better results. It was getting dark and I rushed to get them sprayed and in so they turned out looking half a**ed, acutally more like a quarter a**ed.

You can't tell until after they're installed though

The finish was even on them.
They just didn't light up properly though

They finally arrived from Germany the other day. Fortunately I don't have the issue that Dan did. They light up perfectly even and look great.

Waiting for pic! Any hyper flashing issues? I really don't want to use a resistor. On my last car, I had hyper flashing then a fuse went out.

Here is what i did, and I am sure when you read this you will also do it:

I initually purchased the BAU15s chromes from Germany, noticed i had less than 50% of the original light. People were honking at me and almost got rear ended a few times. Safety was more imp to me than looks in this situation.
I painted the stock orange bulb with chrome paint and noticed that the light was brighter, but not bright enough. I then purchased a new set from the dealer and here is my solution.
I cut a piece of automotive tape, about 1.5-2mm thick and wrapped it aound the center of the bulb. I then spray painted the bulb. After it was dry, i removd that strip of tape to expose the unpainted thin line of amber. The amber coming out of that thin line was just enough to give me a bright bulb. Now its about 85% of the OEM light, with NO probably 1% egg yolk that you really cannot see!!!

The ones I have are canbus. My relative informed me from out of country stating they will work. He's planning to do business exporting some goods. This should be a good start.

Here are my pics. I have red 44 LED canbus. They are plug and play, no error. Sorry i didn't have time to take a pic from further away

Flashing (i'm using cellphone camera, it came out a bit orange-y, but they are red!)

    Non flashing

more info. later. I'm at work lol

Yea, i'll do that later in the evening when i get home when it gets dark. I'll have tail lights on as well.

I'll record a short video of them flashing.

BTW, they flash at normal speed, no hyper flashing.
