help. Stuck 398 miles from home. Car kept losing power, running out of fuel (even though I had a quarter tank). Stopped and filled it, but could only barely get to next exit. Step on gas- no go. Let off gas, car catch back up and run. Wife noticed definite new sound in back. Took her many miles and comments before it finally sunk in and I remembered the same groaning noise from a fuel pump going out on a cabrio. So, fuel pump bad. Am preparing to go out and jump terminals, as per bentley manual. That should tell if it is transfer pump or fuel pump. My main concern now is are the pumps under the rear seat or in the trunk?
By the way, I made it to a motel (lucky enough one that accepts pets!)
I don't know exactly, but I know that the fuel filter is easily accessible because (in order to avoid a fuel pump problem) I asked my dealer to change it during my last oil change and I was not charged any extra time, just the price of the fuel filter.
This makes me think that it was just a matter of changing it (no disassembly was required).
searched this forum for fuel filter, came back with detailed instructions and location.
By right rear wheel, under car. Will replace after a night of rest in the motel
Changed fuel filter. Simple job. Fuel line clips were not as difficult as I thought they would be.
Drove in parking lot- FULL POWER. Got on road and after about 20-30 miles thought I noticed diminishing power (loping engine) let off gas and drove easily trying to baby it home. The more I drove, the more evident and worsening condition of loping motor. As if running out of fuel. Finally died. Now 328 miles from home. Rollback truck coming tommorow to pick me the wife and the cat up. $800.00 Still fairly certain that I have fuel pump problems. Car will start, at first would run with soft gas pedal. Then got to where I had to completely let off gas so motor would not stall, then could softly accelerate and maybe get to 45 MPH. Then slower. Finally, will start and run for a second or two; but make sure the ac is off!
Will know more after I get home and work on it.
Just realized today that I have an affection for the car, and the costs so far have not ruined it. Note I said so far.
