Anyone here know anything about surfing? I figured since I have a free summer, I might as well take up on a few activities that will keep me active.
Looking for what gear I should get, what to watch out for, etc.

Surfing is an unreal workout and possibly my favorite
hobby.
Best bet is to go to a local surf shop and ask some questions. Suit size
will all depend on body type and thickness based on water temp. I'd recommend
the sport to anyone!!
Avoid any sort of reef break to start. Never paddle out alone!! Keep out of peoples
way. Never ditch your board, people get hurt.

There's a surf and skate forum in the community and lifestyle section, but the skate side gets a lot more (okay, all of it) traffic.
Is it a good workout? It can be. For the most part, it isn't continuous exercise; it's lots of sitting punctuated with short sprints of paddling. If you are looking for continuous exercise, I'd recommend getting into stand-up paddling. You can do it in the ocean, in a lake... just realize that people (myself included) ****ing hate stand up paddlers in the line-up.
Comb craigslist for used gear.

I surf every chance I get(not often enough). Summer is hear and south shore Oahu should be heating up soon. I love it. Im still not a bad ass and it took two solid years of royally sucking to get here.
My advise is to go out and get lessons the first couple of times.
