    American car parts...yuck!

Tons of people in SoCal have a vagcom/VCDS setup. Post in your regional forums and I'm sure people will be all too happy to get it done for you.

I did the car just for drag racing mostly... Some canyons. Lots of fun.
My best time was only 11.95 in the quarter. I never even ran the car with the 2nd blower though. My goal was 11.6s.

As far as the vagcom thing... I'll post it up. Thanks!!!

Cant believe green tops kept up with that, I used those in my 1.8l G60, although it was running 18psi, big valve head,Schrick cam, SDS so on and so on. Think they are rated at 550cc .

    Injectors? I was running LS9/ZR1 52lb/hr 4BAR injectors.

haha looked like Bosch green tops, those are 42lb. You had a beast of a car! Down here Bristol Motorspeedway would make you have a full roll cage running those times

Ya, I am familiar with those stupid injectors. GM discontinued them recently and it has caused massive havoc in my world, and I hate massive havoc. The G8 used a different 42 or 43lb injector stock though... I have a set laying around if you know anyone who needs them

Here we only need a roll bar at 11.49 or faster when running drag radials (Like I was)... My car is pretty beastly & honestly, I will cry like a baby when the new owner comes to get her next weekend.

So hypothetically speaking, what mods would you do to your JSW

    Your G8 looks good

I understand completely. I've got a Golf R which is my toy car. Not nearly as fast but it's getting set up for going around turns a whole lot faster than in a straight line...

But anyway, my point is that the full blown version of VCDS is a great diagnostic tool, and the extra performance is well worth the $100. If all you want is window rolldown, get it done. If you're going to spend time tweaking and customizing the car's behavior to fit your preferences, it's worth its weight in gold.

Well. I'd love to debadge, lower, tune, intake & exhaust... And I guess down pipe...
I'm new to turbos, how much boost does my car make stock & how much can the bottom end handle?

Well, the good news is, there isn't enough aftermarket support to really worry about the bottom end. Debadging takes some dental floss, so I doubt hubby will complain. The only thing that will truly deliver a performance gain is the tune, which can be good for as much as 45 hp and 110 ft lbs (Malone stage 2) and, apart from the extra go is completely invisible on its own. It doesn't even up the boost pressure (it does increase volume), and it doesn't really change fuel rail pressure, which is important for our cars, as the high pressure fuel pump seems to be the weak link.

The downpipe is an expensive upgrade and requires the tune to go with it. I've got the Performance Diesel Engineering unit in mine and several of my family's TDI's but the Rawtek is much cheaper. You have to do the tune after the downpipe, and the install is a massive pain!

On my brother's and dad's cars, here's what came out:

    and here's what went in:

    _MG_0897 by Toe_Ball, on Flickr

Which is the PDE downpipe a magnaflow muffler, and a Borla cat-back. One car is tuned at stage 1, the other at stage 2 with Malone tunes. The stage 1 car went Houston to Toronto and back with no hypermileing (in fact spent a significant time around 80 mph) and averaged 62 mpg. Those are both Golf 2-doors. My JSW has the PDE downpipe and a Banks cat-back with no muffler.

I don't think the downpipe would be a good idea in California. I was sweating inspection here in VA with mine. They can detect a forced ready and the smell is evident.

Oh, yeah, no. Not for California. Do the tune only and forget about the rest. Sorry.

Well, my G8 was so far from smog legal... We get 5 years till the first smog inspection, honestly, I have never kept a car that long. (My TDi makes #19 I think).

    So, downpipe is just exhaust?

Funny thing about the debadge, My hub says he thinks it would look off balance with the jetta gone and the TDi still there. There is NO way he will let me lower it, he hates driving the G8 because he thinks it is too low. Just because you have to slow down for speed bumps and driveways, doesn't equal too low in my book. But that JSW that toe posted looks PERFECT.

Maybe just a tune is the way to go for us... blahhhhh boring!

Well, it would go from being a clean diesel to a regular one, complete with black smoke (though just a little, see posted video), but the downpipe can, optionally, delete the DPF, EGR, and both cats. In Texas, they don't emissions check diesels. They look to see if the Check Engine light is on, and if not, they do the safety (mostly means they click yes a bunch of times without looking) and give you your sticker.

Nah, the Golf R only has one badge from the factory and it looks fine.

You should always slow down for speed bumps and driveway entrances, lowered or not. Not doing so is hard on bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, and could mess up the alignment, reducing mileage and tire life. Just saying. BTW, thanks, that JSW I posted is my daily.

Thank you for all that!! I think I better just leave it a clean diesel. My husband would KILL me if he knew I was even considering it... maybe in the near future, once the new wears off.

And thanks for the kudos on my G8. To my knowledge, its the only girl built G8 in existence!
I will really miss the car when its gone, but I will love having my garage back. Right now it is just protecting the G8 & cluttered with all the stock parts ready for the new owner to come pick her up.
Its been 8 days since I last drove it & to be honest, it is kinda nice knowing that 140hp is enough. For now.

Yeah I think here in CA that diesels have a new mandate to be smogged every 2 years! So, I will have to get my car smogged April 2013, and you will have to have yours smogged June 2014. Big bummer.

Diesels don't fall under the 5 year rule for first smog?

    Plus, I know a guy

    My husband drives a 97 4x4 suburban. he's not a car guy.

Well, he works from home 95% of the year. The truck gets probably 5k miles a year. And less now that he will drive the TDi when he goes in to work. It is cheap as hell to maintain/insure & is a great 'truck' for when the zombies come.
