So my gf is thinking about picking up an 09 gti in white, 6 speed. Low miles.
I personally have an MK1 TTQ 6 and about to pick up a B5 S4. I'm all for her getting this thing since shell be trading her almost paid off 07 Toyota FJ.
Anyway, I'm a gti newb... I know enough to get me into trouble and i only know as much as I do from the small research I've done on the MK4 gti's which is the 1.8l.
My question is: What are the pros and cons of this generation? She could afford anything she wanted but wants to keep it under 19k...
Any reason to go above or below this gen?
Thanks fellas...
A post-2008.5 GTI will have the all-new "TSI" engine versus the previous "FSI" engine - that's a very good thing, since the latter has several problems (albeit not to all owners).
The MkVI has a number of important updates (more Laser welds for as stiffer chassis, more sound dampening, slightly better tuned suspension, arguably better exterior looks) - but only she can decide whether those differences would make her feel comfortable with (perhaps) spending a little over her limit. Check KBB and edmunds for going prices in your area, and pay attention to equipment level - makes a huge price difference. Also note that the MkVI will be discontinued this fall, with the MkVII upcoming. So, that may make the MkVI more affordable the beginning of next year.
The MkIV is completely outdated now: much less safe, no independent rear suspension, much slower, several niggling known problems.
