Thread: Wipers don't work.

  1. 06-09-2012 09:26 AM #1
The wipers on my 98 passat do not workk in any position. The washers work, so it's not the fuse.
I'm assuming it's the relay or the switch. I found a used switch, but it's from a 99 passat. Will that work for my car?
Also, has anyone replaced the switch? Are their any special tools required?

Regarding the relay, it's just pull out plug in and go so no special tools. They're both the B5, so it'll fit. Just find the relay.

However if it were the relay, you'd have other functional issues with other things as well. I.e. on my old MK3 GTI, it also controlled I think it was the climate control.

If the relay still doesn't fix the problem, it's most likely your wiper motor. I know for the MK3's, they tend to go out pretty easily. Did you notice the wipers slow down or just stutter for a second before they went out?

I just bought my B5.5 Passat, so I'm learning what has a tendency to going out often and what doesn't, so those are my only two ideas so far.

Thanks for the info. I ordered the switch. I'll give that a shot first and if that doesn't fix it, I guess I'll give the relay a shot.

I'd locate and check the fuse if you haven't physically checked it yet. If my memory serves me correct the washer motor and wiper motor are on different fuses.
PM me for fender rolling in the 845 !!!!!

Checked the fuse, swapped out the relay, swapped out the switch. I guess the motor is the only component left.
Is there a way that I can check it before attempting to replace it?
