I guess I'm figuring I'll have more definitive issues and consistent codes/CELs before I get anywhere near the point of the OP's status. I am well behind him in miles. Maybe that's just wishfull thinking on my part.

If there were a simpler way to verify this issue I'd be all over it. But I'd hate to spend the cost of disassembly only to find this isn't my issue.

There isn't much cost, do it yourself. It's easy. Pull front bumper, remove intake manifold, remove valve cover and then remove the upper timing cover. IF the gear is damaged, you'll see it. If it isn't then run some new RTV on the timing cover and put it all back together. It's simple.

Hmmm I wonder if this is what was slowly happening to my car.... I thought we all agreed that chain noise like described was NOT due to the chain tensioner.
