glossy with an alleged contrast ratio that is very impressive.

    jury is out.

According to the Crucial Configurator the max capacity of the new "regular" MBP is 16GB. You have to go 8GBx2.

    Memory:
    DDR3 PC3-12800
    Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-12800, DDR3 (non-ECC)
    Maximum Memory: 16GB
    Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-12800 with a maximum of 16GB kit (8GBx2) per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.

The non-Retina MacBook Pro is looking more and more like a lame duck.

For the $400 premium that the Retina model carries, you get the following:

    - same processor
    - 8 GB RAM vs 4 GB ($100 BTO option on non-Retina)
    - 256 GB SSD vs 500 GB 5400 RPM ($500 BTO option)
    - 1 GB VRAM vs 512 MB VRAM
    - Retina display

Unless you're on a really tight budget (in which case you prob shouldn't be buying a $1800 computer anyways) or you REALLY need an optical drive or the additional ports, buying a non-Retina MBP makes no sense IMO.

The Retina MBP is a stunning piece of hardware, but its use of entirely proprietary and non-upgradable parts make the $2.2k price a tough pill to swallow. I understand that this isn't new for Apple nor entirely unexpected, especially given the massive system power in a such a small form factor, but it is disappointing nonetheless.

I was considering going all out for the Retina MBP, but I think I might save a grand and go with the upcoming Asus Zenbook Prime. It offers a great IPS hi-res display ("only" 1080p) that is far superior to the MBA, seems to have improved on almost all of the flaws of the old Zenbook, and can be configred to offer considerably more power than the MBA (discrete graphics and an i7). Or I'll just wait for Haswell and get an ultrabook then.

Nothing can be considered great with the introduction of this new retina display on the MBP. You are 800 pixels smaller in height. That is the entire size of my last crappy 14" laptop.

It is very impressive, but for me the screen isn't worth the price, the complete lack of upgradability and, most importantly, serviceability (outside of Apple). 1080p on a 13.3" screen is essentially "retina" anyway; there's no way you can discern individual pixels at that resolution and screen size from a reasonable viewing distance.

that depends on the def. of "reasonable" - which is different for everyone.

I think it's a great box, but it's not for me either.

The inability to tinker with it - including just adding RAM, will turn me away. Let alone the price tag.

Sorry but the first few paragraphs makes me wonder if they know wtf they are taking about.

If you're replacing something as ubiquitous and functional as Google Maps, you had better be just as good
Google Maps absolutely sucks on the iPhone- its a half-assed implementation that doesn't even work as automated turn-by-turn. It's literally google maps from a browser on a phone. It's nowhere near as functional as the Android version.

True, but the version on the iphone still appears to give much more info at a glance than the apple maps option.

We're still a good 3-4 months out from launch. I suspect it will improve significantly in that timeframe.

Get back to me when we are actually looking at a released version and not a beta 4 months from release.

Google Maps on Android is absolutely more powerful than on the iPhone.. I don't know what all features are included, but lacking turn by turn directions is a big minus.. but that was left out on purpose to give the competitive advantage to Android.

I agree it's not fair to compare the experience on an iPhone because clearly Apple maps will be an inprovement. Comparing Apple maps on iOS to Google Maps on Android is the only valid one.. and based on what I've seen so far, Apple has done an amazing job, but still have work to do to before their app is on par.

Originally Apple left out turn by turn Navi to entice TomTom. Steve Jobs announced Tomtom during the iPhone 3G debut. I don't really care that much about included Navi because they aren't necessarily better than specialized apps.

The perfect example is Google NAV while it may satisfy most people, I find it's Navi directions not better than Navigon, Garmin, but better than Tomtom atleast imo.

In big cities like NYC, you have to take account of traffic conditions not just route the shortest distance. Very often Google NAV takes me through the worst part of NYC because it's the shortest distance. If you live out in the suburbs I'm pretty sure most Navi would do the job. I also prefer built in or pre-cached maps over live data maps. Countless times, no data signal lead to Google NAV unable to catch up, while Navigon works without data signal. So hopefully Apple can offer pre-caching of local state maps.

  17. 06-14-2012 11:07 AM #52
Google Maps allows pre-caching of individual map areas (10 mile radius). I do not believe there is a limit to the number of areas you can pre-cache, you just have to do it manually one by one. I have all of Connecticut pre-cached. Very shortly they will be introducing fully cached offline maps. They were holding back simply due to storage capacity (well, lack of) on mobile devices, but that isn't a problem any more.

    Source?

I was pretty sure they don't allow caching because their business model depends on people accessing fresh data and getting served ads.

Cached Google Maps would be amazing. I used to be able to do it with an app for my old Nokia N95 and for Blackberry, but Google caught on and made it impossible for the program that downloaded the maps to work.

..and 10 years later the ipod classic (160gb) is still the same price.....

Ordered a new MacBook Air (13inch):
    • 2.0GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz
    • 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    • 256GB Flash Storage

Can't wait to compare it to my 2006 13 macbook 2.0 core2 that I just upgraded to 4gb and a 128gb Crucial M4 SSd (running snow leopard).

Ended up ordering a MBPR 2.3/16/256 on the 15th.

Still waiting for it to ship... looks like it'll be a while, they're still on orders from the 12th it seems.

Mine arrived friday, been loving it so far, hoping google chrome fixes the freezing issue that is happening on all the new macs.

    UPDATE

Gizmodo.com posted a "fix" for the Kernel panic issue, going to give that a try.

A coworker of mine said he heard a rumor that Apple is going to phase out the 17" MBP. I have been a long time user of the 17" size and I'm hoping that rumor isn't true. I'd love to have the thinner style of the new 15".

Has anyone heard anything about it?

It's already phased out, but the Retina ships with a "1920x1200" mode available in the control panel, called "More Space". (It's actually a 3840x2400 mode, due to how the HiDPI support works, scaled down to 2880x1800.)

It's a shame that it's gone. If one's concern was simply desktop space, the control panel option you describe would be fine. For loyal 17" purchasers like my dad and, perhaps in a few years, myself, the more pressing issue is the size of things on the screen (old man eyes).

None of the above takes away from the sheer awesomeness of the 15" retina MBP, though. What a machine.

Bah, that's what glasses are for.

(Due to quirks of my vision, I wear bifocals (and need them due to my right eye) over a 20/20 or better left eye. I'll be doing one of the hacks to get 2880x1800 desktop area, and that's in fact the entire reason I bought the machine. My current machine is a ThinkPad with a 15.0" 2048x1536 screen swapped in... this will be even more extreme as far as density, but it'll do nicely.)

I'm not in the market for a new one right now. Mine is only a couple of years old.

It's going to suck when I get around to replacing it. though. I suppose I'll be stuck with the 15". Sure, you can bump up the resolution, but it won't be the same.

Any rumors about a refreshed Mini ? and if it's going to end up like the newest MBPro w/ limited upgradeability ? Figure current base and then upgrade to SSD and maxed out RAM should do fine for quite a while.
