If the timing belt is whining that much it is too tight and will fail.

really? the guy who installed it was a VW tech.. I hope it doesn't break. How do I go about loosening it? Could this be causing these idle issues?

Save your reciept if it breaks and causes damage it's on the mechanic.

    Check for vacuum leaks.

Are you sure it's the timing belt that's whining?

How could I find vacuum leaks? I have a neuspeed pflo intake.. I sometimes hear a sucking noise from the fender where the filter is but i think it's just the air coming in..

Im not 100% sure but when he installed it he had my power steering belt off and it was kinda chewed up but he put it back on and told me to get a new one soon. And since then when i turn the wheel at a complete stop sometimes it makes quick squeal noises like chirping tires and the steering wheel hops as it turns..

when I drive i can hear the whining when i give it gas or accelerate but i can't hear it while it's idling regular (around 850)

im super stumped.. I just want it to run good again..
Thanks for all your help guys

It's possible the power steering belt is slipping, not the timing belt. Verify that.

Do you have any scan tools available to you?

I had it scanned and it showed up an o2 sensor code, so I deleted it.. something about catalyst inefficiency..

All this trouble started after the CEL came on a couple weeks ago, and then it started doing the starting issues and the rev hang and stuff it is super annoying!

it started after the first start up with the new timing belt and after the belts were put back on. it's been like 500 miles now..

How do i verify it?? I'm really confused. Im scared my engine will break. I'm really concered about the idle issues and the really high revs on start up.. that's what is annoying..

    thanks

To verify that, remove the power steering belt and see if the noise goes away. Don't run the engine too long though, that belt also turns the water pump. If the belt is worn out, this would be a good time to change it as well.

Exactly what code numbers did you get?

Make sure all the vacuum lines are connected. Perform throttle body ADP with VCDS.

Have you taken any of the suggestions above yet?

    Checked for vacuum leaks?

Verified the noise? Verified the timing is correct? Performed throttle adaptation?

Still havin trouble with this.. it's so annoying! when i start it and it revs up to 3k, drops to 2.5, raises a little, drops, raises, etc.. If I just put it in gear and start it and pull off when it revs by itsself i can drive away easy. i really dont understand this at all..

You've been given suggestions, have you actually done anything yet?

Hurt says he's in your area, and offered to look at the car personally. He knows his stuff. Have you taken him up on the offer?

I'm going to see her this weekend and try to figure things out.. To me, it seems like it needs a throttle adaption and possibly a loosening of the timing belt. I know she DEFINITELY needs a power steering belt.. It was ruined last I saw it. I'm thinking this whining noise might be a messed up waterpump being forced to spin, too. It's a long shot, but I'm going to try to help her with this.

PS: Thanks for the kind words, bud.

I just thought that MAYBE it could be the MAF? Try disconnecting it and leaving it running and see if anything changes.

I cant figure this out!!! it wasn't rev hanging at all for a good 5 miles today, then bam.. rev hang at 2k slowly float back down to around 1400 then VERRRYY slowly down to 1000.. sometimes it idles normal at 850 but it almost stalled a few times today. when i start it it revs really high without me touching the gas! sometimes, it cranks and cranks and cranks, but wont start til i turn the key 4 or 5 times! could this be my throttle body? as i said, i had it adapted after the cam install, my cel came on and ever since ive been having these problems... please help..

OBDII ABA? Possibly a bad TB. Let Colm look at it.

I can come over tomorrow and check Jess, if you'd like.

I agree with Travis, it sounds like the throttle body is messed up. Sometimes they break inside out, and never work the same. It's the stupid idle gear-things, usually. If you want a "new" one I can bring one. I -think- I have a OBD2 complete head in the shop.
