i'm going to be replacing mine soon as well, 2-3 weeks from now, have you checked www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/ ? would you be willing to part with the old pump?

Hey guys,
Gonna be changing the timing belt on my 1997 AAZ soon and I need some help.
I've never done a timing belt before in my life (new to doing a lot of this stuff alone...I've done a lot alongside my dad, though) so I really don't know much.
From what I can gather, the procedure is the same as it would be on an AHU TDI, but I can't really find clear info on how to do that either. I should really buy myself a Bentley manual, but I haven't gotten around to it.
SO, does anyone have a guide on how to do the change? Or could someone at least give me a bit of a walkthrough? Any kind of help would be awesome here...scanned Bentley pages? I'm not really sure.
I'm not gonna do the Mark and Pray method that I've heard about either. I will be replacing my injection pump at the same time, so I'm just going to do all the timing fresh as per these instructions:

Any help anyone can give me would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks!![]()

I would, but I have to send my core to Giles. Sorry man!
I'll check out that forum a little later...have you found anything about the change specifically on there?

nope, just had a very hard time finding any aaz info until i found it. i don't have time to do much research until i have time to change belt, i should be on the job site right now actually...

You can find some good info on vwdiesel.net as well. There is some stuff on here as well, it's just hard to sift through all the TDI vs IDI (what we have) info.
I might end up doing my belt before you, depending on a few different things...but if you want to shoot me a PM or reply to this thread after you do yours and give me a little walkthrough of what you did, that would be awesome.

There are 2 styles of AAZ pumps. Some pulleys attach with a single large nut on the shaft, other pulleys are attached to a smaller pulley with 2 bolts. If it's the single nut then timing is idential to the 1.5/1.6 engines

If it's the 2 piece pulley, it's basically the same except you can skip the dial indicator and just use a 6mm (I think) pin to lock the smaller pulley in place on the pump and then tighten the 3 bolts once the belt is tensioned.
